I would love to be content with just one but it's not going to happen. Love the ability to change it up and pair pieces with my wardrobe, settings, etc.

I like to choose and wear a watch based on my mood. Sometimes I like to wear something on a leather strap, something small, sometimes I need something water resistant etc. There you go and the collection starts.

I used to be "that guy" and I've sometimes thought about a large collection but for now 4-5 nice watches would be just perfect for me, 2-3 maybe even. What's nice about the one watch guy is that he does anything and everything with that one watch. It's those watches that make the phrase "if this watch could talk, the stories it could tell" so meaningful.

This resonates with me, and it doesn't preclude someone from loving or appreciating watches. I've loved watches my whole life, my first word was apparently "clock," and I vividly remember dreaming about watches when I was in grade school. I'm sure Rolex marketing from the 80s heavily influenced me, and all that I really ever wanted was a Sub, and, once I finally got one, I quit wearing everything else. I still read watch blogs and forums everyday and love talking about them, but I don't need or want to acquire more watches. I feel the same about cars, which I spend a lot of time thinking about, but I don't desire a collection of them. I'd rather compare stories with owners of other cars.
I prefer using singular things, rather than being a collector. I have a snowboard rack on my Porsche that I drive in all conditions, I wear my Sub everyday, and, despite being a musician who's had a lot of gear run through his hands over the years, I tend to fall back on the same old guitar. I guess I'm not much of a fashion guy who wants a lot of options. I'm just a guy who likes overpriced tools. :) |

Same here. Went 16 years (I think it totaled) with a Raymond Weil chrono as my one and only.

My dad wore this from 1971 until he gave it to me in the mid 90's. He did have a gold Hamilton watch, but wore that only on special occasions.

I think for a lot of people 1 watch only can be rather freeing really. It is not that your passion for watches has to stop when there is only ''1'' some people just know exactly what they want, i can sort of appreciate that!
If i have to choose, i come back to a few models all the time but in different variations… Thats the problem. |

Jack Nicklaus is one that comes to mind. I could be a one watch guy for sure. Most likely gold or platinum subc.

The same mentality as watch collecting is on the Jeep forum where stock jeeps are boring and almost everyone "enhances" them to varying degrees running into the many thousands of dollars.

My Dad has more than one watch (Rolexes & other brands), but I only see him wearing two: His platinum YM & the Marathon GSAR I got him. He's been trying to live a simpler life & I even caught him *gasp* not wearing a watch at times. I tip my hat to the man. I will wear whatever I feel like. I do only wear my Citizen ecodrive chrono at work, though.
My father-in-law has a Tag Hueur (I couldn't tell you the model...) that he wears all the time. I've never seen him wear anything else. I imagine that as I age, my collection will shrink to just 3 pieces. |
