$900,000 watch heist

Just saw on the news that 4 thieves smashed the Rolex showcase at the Atlanta Mayor's and made off with over 20 Rolex watches totaling over 900k..
Were in and out in under 30 seconds..
This is just terrible.
The bottom of the barrel.
Sorry I don't have the link handy but it can be found with a quick search.
Wanted to share another unfortunate robbery story..

guess that means we'll seeing a lot of new Rolex watches for sale online without their papers very soon!

It seems too easy to rob these dealers. On the flip side, all of their merchandise is insured and they probably don't want to put up a fight for their own safety.

Someone walked out the door with a yellow gold pres or Daytona from the same store a year ago. Maybe hire some security?

Well they stole watches worth on average $52,941 so these are the higher end models these should be easy to spot. I mean otherwise they would very well be the gold models and then sold for melt down value... anyways what a bunch of low lives.

Laminated glass should be mandatory in these stores ! Paying for an off duty police officer would be smart too !

I read where stores stopped hireling guards because squeamish customers thought it made the environment appear unsafe looking and presented a image of danger. This is why I am my own "armed guard".

In before someone says that the criminals need a source of income too.

I digress in the fact that these robberies seem to be occuring at an alarming rate lately.

I live in New Jersey and there is a super high end mall (short hills) and I know that there is security guards at a bunch of stores such as Tiffany Cartier lv and tourbillon to just name a few they are dressed in a suit and don't stand out at all.

AP & Wempe both have guards. Not threatening at all.

Reality is, don't know if they are armed because if they aren't, then they're pretty useless to thieves that are ready to carry out a planned mission.

I like the old days when all upper end stores and banks had a uniformed armed guard. It carried a direct no bs consequence of action that any idiot street thug could grasp.

this and your previous comment makes me agree that you really come from a different generation!

I hate this kind of security at shops. I'm one of those people who would prefer not to shop at a place with this kind of security because of the reason stated above by some other commenter.

i was there at the Mayor's in Lenox mall today. The sales lady said they hit the showcase with all the YG models. Platinum DD II was left alone cuz they probably didnt know what it was. They knew what they wanted to hit.

Tourneau in King of Prussia PA has a couple of armed guards at the door after being robbed last year. My AD used to have a guard. Now you have to be buzzed in. Still don't understand why they don't all use laminated glass.

I see these threads pretty regularly. I've never commented in them - until now...but I wanted to ask an honest non-judgemental question.

What's the point of these types of threads?

I am not criticizing. Really. Just trying to understand how a robbery of a watch / jewelry store contributes to the discussion of watches themselves - brand, features, functions etc.

Robberies like these I believe will continue until policies are implemented by jewelry stores to stop such occurrences. I see nothing wrong with Armed Security Guards/Off Duty Police Officers being hired to deter incidences such as this. And in a Mall I doubt a shootout(but yes, I know it could happen)would occur...as too many witnesses and getting away would be more difficult.....

I would imagine that once these criminals find out they missed the Platinum watches they will be more careful next time(if there is a next time), become better educated so they do not miss out on taking all the good ones(did they get the Leopard Daytona???).....the irony is when they "Fence" the stuff they will not get a lot for their crimes.....

And I sure am glad that no one was hurt during this crime because lots of times people who are desperate during criminal activity will do crazy things that do not make sense.....

If your instinct says they're unrelated, I agree with you. It's no different from the idea of posting innumerable threads reporting a break-in at--you name it, any luxury goods seller or nonwatch jewelry store. I think it's weird, frankly, to have these threads blooming here like it matters because of the Rolex connection. (If it's general tut-tut about crime, I think we can all agree we're against crime.)

And with the likelihood of inappropriate responding so high, what really is the point?

There are numerous security improvements that could be made to make it more difficult to pull off a smash and grab. The majority of those involve making the items more difficult to obtain (ie. lexan or other difficult material to beak display cases, being buzzed in, using dummy display watches and keeping real watches in the safe) The problem with these is that they force to bad guy to be in the store longer which greatly increases the chance for something really bad happening. A thief will typically have a plan and when that gets disrupted, that's when things go sideways. Also, in a large mall, most jewelry stores seem to be located on corners to increase traffic. Do they sacrifice all of their walk in traffic for some watches?

Phone shops use dummy display phones to stop thieves, what about the AD's following suit, and only display watches with no movements in, and faux hands, and gold plated etc.

Its not too difficult to keep the real things in their safe until a genuine buyer comes in.

True...this particular thread is in the open forum. However, I've seen many in the general section.

I guess I should have focused more on trying to understand the fascination with these threads. Are they exciting? What can a member learn from them other than these watches are valuable and people will steal them from ADs. I get that.

Agree with Chic Farmer that these threads can go awry..but I wanted understand why folks find them interesting.

actually these robberies are good for business. promotes the store and the store just collects insurance. They win cause we are talking about it too!!

also the price of the watches will go up due to the shadiness and lost averages.

retail theft causes companies to jack up prices. bad for consumer. always.
