Smoke and mirrors...
I don't know of any other industry that uses more smoke and mirrors to sell it's product than the watch industry. Some of the expensive watches you see around are nothing but junk with junk movements but bring a relatively high price. There are some very good watches out there, and well, some not so good. Sometimes the packaging the watch come in costs the company more than the movement inside the watch, yes, that's true.
Most of the general public really knows nothing about watches and they buy them based on looks, current trends, desire, etc. This is one industry (among others) where it really pays to do some due diligence before making a purchase to be sure your cash is well spent and that your new timepiece will be working same time next year. There are some great watches made today as we all know, just be careful and do your homework first and don't fall into the marketing hype. Tom |

Since you put this message in the Rolex section, are you referring to Rolex as being one of these companies?

No, not at all
Just ageneral comment about the watch industry, Rolex makes a fine watch but there are better ones out there and most of us know that but may not want to admit it. There marketing is pretty straight forward and from what I can see it's free of the "smoke and mirrors" I mentioned. Some companies rely heavily on marketing hype. Rolex is what it is, a great product that sells very well and will always be in demand.

Well, I like to think I did my homework but it was relatively quick and easy. I wanted a well-made, good looking watch from a watchmaker with a good reputation that I could wear in any setting, from the courtroom to around the house to diving.
So I went to the Rolex website, narrowed down my choices, visited a couple of ADs (whom I found lacking for one reason or the other), discovered this website, asked for advice and opinions, hooked up with a local fellow TRFer who introduced me to his AD, and bought the watch. Although this process took a couple of weeks, in terms of total time spent I would guess maybe 8 hours, probably less. There may have been better choices out there, but I don't have the energy and time to devote to researching watches and I knew that a Rolex would fit the bill for what I was looking for. At the end of the day, it's all about getting a watch that makes you happy.

Nearly all industries use smoke and mirrors.
Cars would be one example.

In order to survive and create a name in a highly worldwide competative market, every company must have a good marketing plan for its own product or service. However, the bottom line is the product itself. It must deliver or perform to its level. Otherwise it will be get rid off by the consumers even if the company puts tons of money in marketing of its product.
Rolex is no exception. It can deliver. When talking about the luxury items, what separates them from the ordinary or so so ones? In my opinion, it's the Package, the whole thing (everything) of a product. For example in car industry, some models of Lexus nowadays can surpass Benz & Beamer in term of reliability or even performance. But why Benz & Beamer are still one notch above Lexus? Pls don't say that Lexus spends less money in marketing than Benz & Beamer. The answer again: the package. And we can see the difference the moment we walk into any dealer of Benz or Beamer. That's my .02 cent. Last edited by rolex5; 14 September 2007 at 04:15 AM.. |

Benz and BMW ARE notch above a Lexus. "Quality" was not in the anaolgy. Lexus ranks higher in reliablity, but thats only part of the equation when talking about that grade of car. For example, Benz is more reliable than a Rolls, but Rolls is still a notch (or two) higher than a Benz IMHO
