First Seiko

Coming back from a recent beach vacation which didn’t treat my digital sailing watch very kindly, I decided that I should get a watch that could withstand the rigours of splashing around in the ocean as well as look good to wear out to lunch or dinner.

...and truth be told, I’ve been looking for an excuse to pick up a seiko diver.

I went back and forth on a couple of models and settled on this one - very comfortable and the dial is lovely.

My only complaint is that the strap is a touch long for my 7” wrist - any suggestions where I can get a shorter OEM strap?



I also tried on the 053 - beautiful watch. I only didn’t choose it as I wanted a more casual piece. (Excuse the upside down photo)



Indeed, the 053 compares reasonably favourably to the BP FF I tried on a couple of months back (which is 20x the price)

Nice watch. For the money it is hard to compete with Seiko. Any Seiko AD can make an order for OEM Accessories. You can also check out Ebay but only buy from a reputable dealer with a lot of feedback.

Very nice bro, just remember that the straps are designed as diving straps to be worn over wetsuits, as this meets ISO standards, if seiko made short straps on their divers they might as well become a fashion brand.
Trim a bit off with a scalpel or scissors if it bothers you.

I trimmed almost an inch off of my Turtle’s strap, Google search for cutting Seiko strap. Used a razor knife around a penny, then finished off with a sanding block and emory board.

I'm about thiiiiiiis close to grabbing an 053 right now.

And the one you settled on is one that got me looking at the new Seiko offerings to begin with.

Both stellar watches that even at full MSRP, are absolute STEALS!

Do it. Great piece. Throw a Uncle Seiko Waffle or Tropic on it and it punches way above it's weight for what you pay.

Oh, I know it!

I have an older SKX007J and it truly SHAMES a lot of "fancy-pants" brands.

They should be more popular, but I'm fine "stealing" them when I'm interested.

*long heritage (that is CONTINUIOUS, not a re-start in recent history claiming a heritage going back to when the brand started...)
*In-house movement. This is such a "big" deal now... Seiko never waivered.
*World-class quality system. The Japanese systems were the model for the current "fad" of 5-S, Kaizan and other systems of quality control. (This is why it's so hard to tell the Korean made models from the Japan made models- they are essentially identical.
*last of the true "tool watches". A quality, reliable watch that doesn't cost a fortune. They can LITERALLY drive nails and still keep good time. 25+ year service intervals are not uncommon...

A lot of watch companies could learn a lot from them. Yes, their designs are not for everybody, but even without getting into world-class Grand Seiko, the fit and finish of a sub-$200 watch really embarrasses a lot of other offerings out there at ten times the price...

It’s hard to capture how pretty the blue color of the 053 is. This is a better effort than the one that I took in my overlit kitchen.
