Whats a good basic tube receiver for under $200? I just need it for my albums, I'll leave everything else to the Denon, lol.

Great systems guys! I miss my dads Yamaha receiver and klipsch towers that disappeared in the 90s when we sold the house I grew up in

Sold my speaker setup from my theatre when I moved. Kept my Integra DTR 7.9 and PSB monitors as well as my Definitive supercube 2 sub. Will put together a small theatre with those in the basement.

No real audiophile here, but we did do a custom home theater when we build our house in 2010. Did a bunch of research and did a middle tier set up. Onkyo TX SR 608 receiver with Klipsch in wall speakers. 3 reference series in the front, and pro's in the ceiling and back wall with a 650 RMS Klipsch sub in the floor. Had it for almost 6 years now with no issues and very happy with the performance. Not the best in the world, but a good performer for a reasonable expense. Great for movies. The speaker screens are paintable, and blend in nicely with the room.

I've spent time in the Vinyl Asylum forum of the Audio Asylum site. The debates on cables, platters and the hocus-pocus improvement products are insane. I've seen six page debates on whether one should clean the dust off of the speaker cables. $160 cable "elevators" which raise the cables two inches off the floor. Of course, you need several. Every improvement "lifts the veil."

I have a vintage Onkyo system. It's the one I've had since college. Just too cheap to upgrade. No comment about my watch collection, please!!

So true. I lost interest in the hobby as the equipment and set-up completely usurped the discussion about the music, which was supposedly the reason for the equipment in the first place.

Some nice pieces everyone, I am a huge audiophile.. have quite a vinyl collection. My background is in the Music industry and I have a degree in audio engineering so naturally I'm drawn to this stuff. My vintage setup is nothing crazy, Yamaha Natural Sound vintage Amp, with Pioneer spring reverb, and a crappy Sony turntable that is soon to be replaced. That said, I do have a pretty slick home recording setup including Lynx audio converters, some vintage Dolby 301 noise reduction I use as exciters in signal path (an old recording trick used on many great albums), Also have a ton of reel to reel gear I still use, including a custom Otari mastering deck. Sorry, totally geeking out here! I love this stuff :)

Let's see, what was my dream system in the day? Infinity Servo Static speakers, Phase Linear or Macintosh amps, Revox reel-to-reel, Sequerra tuner (sic, know I misspelled it)...Dynaco, Voice of the Theater Altecs..the names keep coming back. Crown, Audio Research, Klipschorns, etc., etc. etc.

Speaking of Revox, Forgot about this one, this is a pretty rare version with 15ips, and built in Studer made amp and speakers (not the ones seen in pic, they are mounted inside the cab), it was a sales demo model. It needs refurb, someday!

Man, I'd love to hear some tape on that unit! I'll bet it would be astounding.

Hang on... Hotel California? That came out in 1976 I think... Maybe "hell freezes over" is what you meant?

And Studer made the best tape decks period. I bet Hotel California was recorded on a Studer 2" deck...

As a side note, the Mark Levinson branded open reel decks were made by Studer.

Not sure how "vintage" it is, but the early silver-face Onkyo stuff was first class. Probably some of the best mass-market stuff in their heyday. You had to go to the boutique makers (like Levinson) to take it to the next level. And you would get a hernia trying to lift it too.

Actually a lot of the brand names we now know as household names made their mark on the world with hi-fi back in the late 70's and early 80's...

If it isn't broke, don't fix it!

I had a Teac A-3340S open reel deck for a while- it was intended for quadraphonic use but I used it for four-track recording because it had three heads (they called it "simul-sync" I think) so the new tracks align with the previous ones.

pretty ironic...when anal-retentiveness supersedes the initial concept/purpose. this mentality can also be seen when it comes to photographic equipment (e.g. OCD types & lens resolution). when the means becomes an end in itself, all is lost.

Absolutely....best part is to play some vinyl on a Saturday afternoon! It all sits in a teak wood cabinet from the craftsmen of Taiwan....

I always wear my 5513 Sub to make life truly vintage!

If it has a McIntosh inside, sure, Paul!

Seriously, i respect those radios. They provided a lot of hours of entertainment to millions of people. That's what really counts.

Oh and Quadraphonic...I almost went there with a Marantz receiver in the '70's (remember the SQ and Discrete decoder modules?).

I always wear my 5513 Sub to make life truly vintage!

Just like the 5513 seemed expensive when purchased new but what has the cost of ownership been per day since purchase?

When I bought my first SA-220 it was a big stretch for me. But I still have it, and it became a desirable collectable model because it sounds fantastic.

It was just another expensive amp when I auditioned it, but it sounded so much better than the (B&K modded mono blocks) I went to this particular store to audition that I had to have it... The best of tubes and mosfets in one package. Michael Elliott is a genius still making amps, but please be seated before you ask for a quote!
