16253 Thunderbird - Thoughts?

I have been a little ill at ease as of late, the glory days of when I would sport hunt sleeper Rolex watches in late 90s early 00s has seemed to have evaporated in the last 10 years. The obscene grotesqueness of AD attitudes and the stress the grey markets have caused on the collector is a pain I think we all feel. However I felt that 'old' twitch a few weeks ago when I stumbled across a full set 1980s Thunderbird Datejust, very reasonably priced and in great condition.

I feel a resumption of my past conquests on sports and military models, but focusing on the obscure, seemingly endlessly nuanced Datejust reference. I might just make my home with the ToG and see where it takes me, I think the reference has legs, and is available in a number of formats that should keep myself and the imminent collector market occupied until the next flavour of the month crops up.

I would be very much interested in knowing your thoughts on this reference.

Have one. Love it. It is my most frequent worn watch.

I had one but never really bonded. I didn’t like it on tt jubilee, wore it on nato, but just a little delicate looking. A Datejust has a larger crown and marginally larger case and just feels more substantial. Interesting, definitely though.
