A Brand to Rule them All

There are very few names in the world of watch collecting that get seasoned watch collectors as excited as Patek Philippe, and that's for a good reason. As one of the Holy Trinity brands, Patek Philippe is one of the most highly regarded watchmakers in the world in terms of craftsmanship, style, and sheer overall excellence. With one of the most influential histories in all of watchmaking, Patek Philippe is genuinely beyond their peers. We are incredibly fortunate to be able to bring you one of their most historically significant chronograph models, the ref. 1579.

The Ref. 1579's History

Released in 1943 at Baselworld, the ref. 1579 was one of Patek's largest chronograph models and remained in Patek's catalog until it was discontinued in 1964. The ref. 1579 is iconic for its unusual briolette lug shape, incredibly open and legible dial, and thick flat bezel that surrounds the crystal. These downturned angular lugs are known as "spider" lugs and frame the ref. 1579's round dial nicely by breaking up the flow of the perfectly circular case. While the ref. 1579 was in production for 21 years; it is still an incredibly rare watch. Made predominately in yellow gold, only 185 pink gold examples were made, with 82 known to exist. The ref. 1579 was released in two series. The first series was produced from 1943 to 1949 and features Arabic and baton numerals and either baton or Feuille hands. The second series was produced from 1950 to 1964 and featured Arabic and square numerals and Feuille hands. The 1955 example we have here has precisely what we would expect from a second series example of this iconic reference.

Original Polish and Parts

The example we are delighted to be able to offer you is in excellent condition. The ref. 1579 does not respond well to polishing, and as such, our example has not been polished, retaining its original surface material. With its highly polished 18kt pink gold case, thick and flat polished bezel, and sharp edges throughout, it would be evident if the case had been polished. In addition to this, the ref. 1579's briolette "Spider" lugs, with their numerous surfaces and abundance of edges, respond notoriously badly to any form of polishing, which exposes any attempts to polish this iconic watch. Our example is also complete with its original leather strap and its original 18kt pink gold pin buckle.

Dial Condition

The example we have listed here has a sought-after co-signed dial, co-signed by Gobbi Milano, the renowned Italian watch retailer. Co-signed dials are stamped with the retailer's name that originally sold the watch and are more sought after by collectors due to their rarity. It has become a niche within watch collecting itself to collect co-signed dial watches, and as such, they command a premium. Our example's dial has aged rather spectacularly and has changed from the white it would have been initially to the gentle champagne hue it has now. This compliments the 18kt pink gold case and brown leather strap perfectly and cannot be found on any white dial ref. 1579, as it depends on the conditions that the watch was stored in.

Previous Auction Results

With the ref. 1579's rarity comes widely documented auction results and prices. In 2018 a no-co-signed 18kt pink gold example at Phillip's Auction sold for around $200,000. An extremely rare 1 of 3 platinum example even sold for over $1,500,000 at Christie's in 2012. With the strong market of today, the rare ref. 1579 is a watch on the up. For $120,000, it will make for a great addition to any collection, whether to wear or keep as an investment piece. With only roughly 185 pink gold examples, and 450 examples between all of the case materials, the ref. 1579 is a highly-coveted watch that most collectors can only dream of owning.
