The DAYTONA - divides opinions above all others

Let me start by saying I tried to get my first Daytona in 2002. I was on holiday in Las Vegas and walked past the Tourneau shop in Caesars and they had a picture in the window. The SA practically laughed at me when I walked in and tried to buy one. I knew nothing about Rolex or the Daytona back then.

Fast forward to 2013 and I finally get the 116520 from an AD. Fast forward more to 2016 and I get the 116500. To me it’s always been my grail, still is I guess.

People though seem very divided. You either love it or hate it. Busy dial, wears small, old fashioned etc etc. About half of my friends like it, the other half don’t. It’s similar with watch forums as well from what I can see. I’ve some great watches and it would be the last to leave. In an ideal world I’d pick 42mm and a cheeky blue dial if I could have one specially made.

What say you?

That collection is damn near perfect. The white dial Daytona is definitely a love/hate I think. I’m on the waitlist for both and originally really wanted the white dial. As time goes on, I find myself favoring the black dial for some reason. I'll buy either if I ever get the call!

Wow! That's an incredible watch

As far as love for Daytona, yes I think it is a great watch and I wear it frequently.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about what fine watches I could get trading in at this market price though. Lange 1 Moonphase, add a little cash for AP RO etc.

Please stop posting this stunner, I have only just recovered from seeing it on TZUK a few weeks back.

Seriously jealous

Just my opinion of your gorgeous collection... strictly based on looks for me,

1. Submariner
2. VC
3. Sea-Dweller
4. Daytona

Beautiful! I will eventually go the route of my birth year Daytona. It is 1963 when it came out with just "Cosmograph".

Just missing a PP Nautilus and it would become the most unimaginitive pimp’s watch collection ever.

Just kidding, great pieces. Personally I don’t fancy a Daytona, but the silver dial variant with Oysterflex is grail territory IMO.

The problem with the SS Daytona is how small it wears. The 116519 is more stunning than the plain 116500 and is 1mm bigger which is a huge plus

I neither love nor hate the Daytona. Its fine I guess. Its sad to read how people let the ADs treat them for a watch though.

I can get along without one, but I choose not to
There’s two I REALLY love....the platinum and vintage big red.

My watch collection, almost complete, consists of 126610LN, 116509, a soon to come 326235, a stainless and gold Brietling Chronomat 44 (black dial) and a Bell & Ross 03-92. In my opinion, all requisite bases are covered; that said, my favorite is the Daytona 116509 white gold, blue dial. For people that "know watches", well...they know...

I’ve never understood the controversy. It’s always been the coolest Rolex ever and I always wanted one. Besides these, I am inline for a 116508 JM.

It’s an iconic watch with many different styles and colors to satisfy the most cynical of the bunch

Thankfully, the Daytona is the only model Rolex hasn’t distorted (yet) with oversized lugs, maxi dials, and overall strange proportions. If they ever maxi dial the Daytona expect the value of the current production models to really skyrocket. I enjoy the classic sporty elegance of the Daytona. It’s the most unique piece in the Rolex line-up with the most complex movement.

Enjoy that amazing collection.

I don’t know. Seems like the Daytona—especially the white dial—gets a lot more love than hate.

I don't see too many folks hating on the Daytona. I love the model. My only gripe is I feel it's too small. No hate though, just wish they made a larger version. If they made a true 42 mm Daytona I'd line up to get one for sure. Beautiful watch.

this.

have owned a daytona and it's still one of my favorite looking rolex's, but the size killed it for me. much much more happy with my true panda speedy at 42mm.

I don't see people hating on the Daytona the way they do, say, the YM II. I think everyone agrees it's an iconic Rolex, but with aspects people have differing views on, particularly the size.

I was never that taken with the SS's, but the 509 steel dial is my daily wearer.

116500 is nice yet could use a red sweep second hand like the 116518LN

Wow! Great SS collection!

Love the Daytona. All the haters help me on my journey to collect more varieties!

It's good to have something for everyone. Daytona for some, something else for others.
