Have never pursued a Patek so don't know much about them and had to do a search online to look at a few. In short, I don't care for the looks of the 5711, mainly the odd looking protuberance from the back of the case. It looks uncomfortable to me. If I were to buy a Patek I'd be likely to prefer a YG, rounded case on leather. But then, I'm an old man and that's usually what we go for.
As for the Rolex, that's a much better looking watch IMO. However, I'm not a fan of WG at all but each to their own. In summary, I would not go for either model you present for a choice. If I had to choose however, it would be the Rolex.

I think this is one of those threads...the Patek has to be the ugliest watch Ive seen surely?...looks like one of those 1st gen crappy digital things ...horrid...might be a great machine but thats 'lip stick on a pig' to my eye.

im in the neither camp ,,, gold aquanaut would be hard to pass by , or a calatrava at that price point ,,, between the two , id go for the rolex , im another , maybe in the minority , but i just dont get the nauty case at all.

Rolex are famous for their SS beater watches. Steve McQueen would roll in his grave if he knew about a white gold Sub.
Patek every time. |

The Nautilus is not interesting to me at all and I think it is the equivalent hype of the Rolex Daytona. I believe it will die down at some point. If Patek route is chosen go with classics like the Calatrava or Annual Calendar. The WG Sub is nice but a WG YM2 would be the outright winner. AM.

Patek marketing make you beleive that a rather ugly SS watch is worth you parting with almost £25k - hilarious totally hilarious. The ss 5711 watch tells time and has date hardly earth shatteringly good- the Rolex Sub wgold - blue, ceramic bezel, maxi dial, maxi hands, platinum inlay numbers, anti reflective , glidelock clasp, blue lume, trip lock crown, cyclops, oyster case, rotating bezel, solid links, and some marketing ofcourse oh and all white gold also with maxi case but at least I can see exactly why Rolex sub tramples the 5711 everyday all day long. Annoys me when silly comparisons are made. Patek 5711 can compare with a basic Seiko and even then I think the seiko would edge it but please don't compare it to iconic Rolex submariner!

the 5711 is pricey for an SS watch but when on the wrist it's worth every penny

I have neither, but my thoughts are that if you are going to get one watch to wear all the time, probably the WB sub. I prefer the classic patek complications more than the sports model. If you want a SS sports model, can consider the Vacheron Overseas chronograph... it's a nice watch!

See this is the problem when you ask opinions--you'll get them. About 50/50.
Go try them both on and make YOUR decision. Sub against Patek...well apples and oranges in so any ways. |

Another vote for the 5711 but only because I'd love anything that said Patek Phillippe on it. But I also happen to think the watch is fantastic looking.

I was in this dilemma last month and I chose the WG Sub. No matter how much I want to get a Patek for its refinement, the watch just doesnt appeal to me.
The WG sub is what I am wearing typing this reply...and its a fantastic watch. Regards. |
