I think I’m passing stage 4, but instead of vintage, stages 5-7 are trying out other brands and becoming a smartass/expert on those other brands.

Is there a phase where you kinda lose interest? Because that’s where I find myself now. I’m happy with what I have but still find myself only really wearing one. Anyone get fatigue?

I’m at 8. LOL

Finally figured out to keep my 2 best watches and dump my mistakes.

My mistakes included purchasing hot Rolex sports models that were too big for my wrist but fit my ego for awhile. Purchasing Rolex and Omega vintage thinking I could outsmart the market. And, some other D-A moves.

Settled in with a new DJ from an AD and got lucky with a mint Ulysse Nardin on a deal.

It was fun overall and I learned what fit my personality.

Spending lots of time on this forum is a sure way to be dissatisfied with what you have.

There's definitely a stage 4.5 where you look to other brands that offer better value/history/quality than Rolex before moving to vintage I think.

Rolex is the best
Buy first Rolex
Buy another Rolex
Rolex for wife,
im a collector now!,
another Rolex, and several more for wife
“Rolexs are for beginners... buy other brand...Panerai, Hublot, IWC, etc etc
Ya know what...Rolex really is the best
Back to buying more Rolexes now

I'm at 9 now, looking at all the young ones chasing their tails at 4 and reminiscing about the good old days way back when.

My path has been

1, 3, 4, 8 and now back to 4.

Suspect next phase going forward will be from 4 straight to 9, 10 then 11.

between 7 and 8 should be:
7a) buying an Audemars
7b) buying a Patek
7c) buying some random new swiss brand that "has a better movement" than Patek

I've actually seen the chart as 10 "being back to Seiko"... either somebody modded it or this one has been modded... but i think it's funnier (and a bit accurate) with 10 being back to Seiko (and I guess only Seiko guys would appreciate it though).

My 1 was Casio instead of Seiko. Wore the same Casio for 20 years. Then went to 2 - Victorinox and a Tag Heuer Aquaracer. Then to 3, one Rolex (white Milguass). Then to 4 - bought pretty much every SS sports model (and one for my wife). Now I'm around number 9, still thinking about other watches, but could easily end at #10 with the Explorer. For me it really is perfect.

Haha, I’m absolutely in the 9 zone now.

Great chart. It’s pretty spot on.

Phases of Watch Collecting

Stage 1-4, dead. Granted that means I am in stage 4. But I hate vintage (other than photos). I will resurrect this thread in a few years when I hit 5.

is there a forum or thread where all us #9 guys can hang out?

I've been there when it comes to watches, but I do miss chatting/debating with 'the boys online' about something.

I not sure where I am. I have a small collection of five watches. Fortis, Prisma, Omega Flightmaster, G-Shock 1000 aviator and a RG DD. I rotate, and I wear my DD often. I’m at the point where I’m generally satisfied. I sometimes think about getting a GMT, but not sure I need it. At least I’m not bored yet, but still not at point where I just have to have another watch.
