DSSD disappointment
I'd really set my mind on a new Rolex to replace my 16800 Submariner that I bought new in 1986. The DSSD seemed to fit the bill so I went to the shop today. I found it way too big, tall so I tried on a SD4K. The Sea Dweller dial is easier to read than the deep sea as it's closer to the crystal and would be my choice however its too close to my Submariner. Now if only they made a 42mm Sea Dweller.....

1986 Submariner and 2015 SD4K are not similar.. it'll be best of both worlds in a collection!

I have to be honest Maxy and say that in function as a watch the only real difference is the maxi dial. I would have liked a bigger difference. I'm not a collector and it would be on my wrist 24/7 and used for everything including all my diving.

Agree that the SDc should be 42mm
But it has nice updates, such as the Glidelock clasp, solid center links, Parachrom balance spring, and ceramic bezel with ceramic ball bearings Too bad the DSSD wasn't quite right for you The weight and height take getting used to But the Glidelock is even better than that on the SDc and Subc If the DSSD had been acceptable, you could get a D-Blue and not feel you got another black-dial Rolex diver |

I liked/had the DSSD, then the Subc and now I'm starting to eye 42mm plus watches again.

Try a GMTc or BLNR for a little variety and the advantages of the new ceramic bezel and solid bracelet.

I have yet to see a D-Blue in person - maybe the hardest model to find. But it looks great in pictures!

As a delighted owner of a MK II as my only Rolex and grail watch, I believe it's a pretty darn good novelty if you had to have one Can't wait until I get the D-Blue |

To be honest, I don't care what anyone labels it as. It was definitely a marketing play by Rolex.
All I know is, it's my favorite piece in the Rolex collection, fits me great, and I love looking at it constantly. I really don't care if they continue to produce it or discontinue production. Won't change my feeling for it now or (hopefully) 20 years from now. I'm fortunate to own one and that all that matters to me.. |
