New to Manual Watches -- Have Question...

So I'm expecting a new Speedmaster soon but have a question: With a manual wind watch, how long is reccomended to let then "sit" before it needs to be wound up ?

I have a couple of other watches I rotate so the Speedy may sit for a little while before i wear it again.

I'd say within the power reserve unless you want to reset it every time. I think it's 50 hours spec, but I had longer in my testing. I think it was 60-65 hours if I recall. This for the 3861 movement. And by the way, it kept quite accurate time near the end of the reserve, I am not sure the last 10 hours or so because I was asleep, but at 48-50 it was keeping accurate time.

Historically, a manual wind watch is wound at around the same time every day, usually when dressing in the morning.

This gives the watch's timekeeping some stability and consistent power reserve throughout the day. If it is your routine, you don't have to wonder if you wound it as often.

If it "sits", set and wind it when you put it on. It won't run if it isn't wound, and it will not wind itself.

Wind it every morning and you will be fine, as stated bellow
This is what I do every morning and I/m a happy camper within +3.3 sec average daily.

With new type of oils now used, you don't have the same issues as in the past. In other words, it can sit as long as you like. Obviously it'll run out of power if you don't wind it.

I'm in the habit of winding mine daily, first thing in the morning, even when I don't wear it.

Yep, this is what I do, too. This way my Speedmaster is set for use any time I choose it.

If you are not wearing it I would wind it every few months but it wouldn’t concern me if I forgot to wind it for 12 months.



They are a pain to wind.

I’ve gone as long as a month or so without wearing my Speedmaster. If I’m not wearing it, I just let it sit and don’t worry about it.

Usually I wear it at least once a week, and just set and wind it in the morning before I go to work.

I never thought there were any special considerations for this watch.

If you're wearing it every day, wind it fully around the same time every day. If you're not, try to wind it and wear it once a week or at least once a month. If it sits longer, it's not a big deal but if you're not wearing it at least once a month, I'd consider selling it or not purchasing it. Watches and cars are meant to be worn and driven once a week or at least once a month.

Great watch. I have a 1861 and a 3861 and they get a lot of wrist time. I wind each one first thing in the morning every day. If I only wore them once a week or so I would just wind them when I was going to wear them.

I used to just make it a ritual to wind it when I woke up every morning. And fewer turns if you do it every day since it's half wound.
