Rolex protective Film: Thought this was a Joke but it’s real
This recent showed up on my Instagram feed. This company is now selling protective film for you watch. Thought they were trolling but I guess there are people who purchase this product. I understand doing this to your car but your watch??

Not saying I agree with it, but, to your point...
People spend $30-50K on a car... People spend$30-50K on a watch? |

I came across this the other day actually - can't really see anyone going in for this unless flipping a watch possibly?

It’s not for me however a small number of forum members have posted personal experience of such products. Given the ridicule those threads attracted, I imagine a few more use similar stuff but don’t admit to it.
I frequent a few car forums and nobody on those has ever been ridiculed for having PPF applied to their cars, at far greater expense and with a much higher degree of futility. I don’t really get the difference. Each to their own.

Saw this last night on IG, I think it’s horrible and can’t imagine putting that on my watch. I bet it just scratches it worse once dirt gets under those sticks. And the ocd in me, if one sticker wasn’t perfect it would drive me nuts, I’ll deal with scratches. Oh and good luck swimming with those on haha

The car = watch analogy is a horrible one, naive at best.
Rolex owners that are concerned with scratches to the point of plastic wrap are financially in over their heads. I wish people would buy and enjoy what they can afford. |

Makes sense. There has been a gap in the marked since people stopped wrapping their couches in plastic

Just check the grey dealers, different price with or without plastic.

Actually, I wouldn't mind something to protect the clasp - particularly the polished center strip on the clasp - on some of my watches. Those are the only marks that seem to bother me at all.

Also, genuine question to you and the OP as I’m honestly not getting it: why do you compare this negatively with applying PPF to cars?

Not for me but I can see some people buying this. Reminds me of that 3m film people put on their cars.

I may be mistaken but I imagine the statement is in reference to people who should be directing their finances to securing additional capital but instead splurge on luxury goods that they really couldn’t afford to begin with. This typically results in not being able to truly enjoy the watch as the resale value becomes a major concern. The focus then shifts to keeping the watch pristine by keeping it in a safe, admiring it in a glass box, wearing it sparingly, wearing it with a band that has a clear protective window, applying protective film. |

Anyone else enjoy seeing how the watch looks with age? I don’t try to scratch it but it feels more like mine after I compare it to a brand new one.

X2 Granted its not for me BUT I would maybe, and I mean maybe consider using it on 1 place on 2 of mine. Bezel on the 116523 and 216570. Both are places where you obviously have the most difficulty polishing/touching up because of the black finishing. Everywhere else I dont care one bit. However I'd still have to see what it looks like in the flesh first

If thats what it takes for you to finally use your watches then do it !
Do it now !! Put it in your car. Put it in your watches. Put it around the house. Cover your couches. Anything to appease your OCD. Anything that lets you relax. So you can finally use and enjoy your goddamn Rolex! |

Do you ever get the sense that these ‘scared to scratch’ owners can easily replace , repair and or add to their collection at any given time? I don’t. I get the opposite impression. I think in the back of their mind they are always thinking ‘If I sell today, I will get $’. The fear of scratches, losing resale value is so paralyzing that they are willing to ‘wrap’ a luxury/jewelry item in plastic to protect it. Rolex is a luxury brand, you shouldn’t be buying something that paralyzes you with fear of some form of financial loss. Regarding the car comparison...where to begin...how about the debris, elements and speed at which the vehicle is moving on a regular basis. Highly unlikely your watch is getting hit moving at 70+mph with debris. Also highly unlikely your watch is hit by bird poop or bug juice and it’s just left there because you can’t always run to the car wash or wipe the car down. When these guys start wrapping their wedding bands, I’ll probably lose it. |

I just don’t understand the stuff. Just one example for me is I swim four times a week (never take my watch off) can you imagine how cheap and disgusting this stuff would make my watches feel after normal use. So now I wrap it in this stuff and I have a sports watch I can’t do sports in? That’s where I (personally of course!) draw the line and call total madness

I don't know why anyone would want to wear a quality watch with bits of clear plastic stuck all over it. The car analogy isn't really accurate. This is different to protecting paint/bright work. It looks like &#!£ too. Hardly noticeable? Dude we can spot a dodgy watch at a hundred paces!

As far as PPF goes, assuming you don’t have the whole car wrapped you’re fighting a losing battle: the elements are going to chip, fade and degrade your paint over time regardless. Indeed PPF doesn’t even prevent all stone chips, the larger ones will pierce it. We will probably have to agree to disagree on this one.

Just got an 114060. First watch over 5 hundred dollars. Scratches on bracelets have never bothered me but the glass always has. Never owned a quality crystal before so not sure how much more durable it is but I could see myself putting film on the crystal.

this....I know it has been mentioned before but can't help but think of the old couches covered in plastic or the chair cushions with the heavy plastic covers. I do get the sense that for some it is OCD around perfection, others it is resale, but in both it seems to be a case where their possessions own them and they just can't enjoy using them.

I just googled sapphire crystal. I guess it is pretty solid stuff. So nevermind the film.

There was a similar thread a short time ago. With similar responses.
My opinion has not changed - this is a silly gimmick. If a person is afraid to wear a watch, then don't buy it.
