Rolex authentification question

I’m about to buy a Sub ND from february 2018 from an unknown seller (114060 is 18 month wait at my AD right now...) and it has the full set. If the serial on the card is the same inside the bezel, does it means it’s ligit?

Also, the watch was bought at an AD near my home, so should I get there for authentification?

Thanks!

The card having the same serial number as the rehaut is not a good measure for authentication as it wouldn't be too difficult for a forger to create a fake warranty card. I would definitely pay for an authentication given you purchased from an unknown seller. The peace of mind is priceless.

If it was purchased at a nearby AD I would do the transaction there. The AD should be able to verify the original sale and the watch.

. . .
No, it does not. Counterfeit watches come with counterfeit paperwork.

Get the watch verified at the AD or do not buy.

I guess so. Or maybe the vendor remember the buyer or something. I have photo of the AD receipt with matching serial number, so I guess they could see if they sold the watch based on that serial?

Not an AD per se, but an experienced watchmaker CW21 who knows Rolex inside and out can/will if he offers the service. Some AD's employ them some don't

It’s hard to describe, but—you’ll know if it’s a fake. Especially with the newer models: the look, the weight, the sturdiness, and craftsmanship is unmistakable. I’ve seen and held a few fakes, even “good” fakes. Within a second or two something just doesn’t seem/feel right.

not necessarily true. Unless you are very knowledgeable in the minute details, it is very easy to be fooled by a modern fake.

No ADs will not authenticate a watch. ADs are run by salespeople first that may or may not have a deep interest and/or knowledge in watches.

Seen a lot of fakes sold here there and everywhere and never once seen a fake Rolex with a matching warranty card. At least not a card the looks remotely close to the real thing. Best thing is to go to a reputable seller with a ton of good feed back, if not then at least pay with PayPal or a credit card so give yourself a chance. Don’t take risks with your hard earned cash unless you can afford to lose it. Go check the watch out section to see those that got bumped for not taking basic precautions.

There’s an AD near me who has a watchmaker who would open up the watch and write all serials and then use it to match paperwork for $50.. not sure if that’s a typical price or situation.. however I definitely would not trust a salesperson to eyeball verify a watch.. good luck!

I have seen fakes S/N checking out to be legit as what they do its that they mass produce one S/N that reflects a real watch and S/N
There is actually a guy that works with me that paid 500 euros for one
So to answer, No
Having the card and S/N matching the watch does not make it legit
Regarding youd second question, yes I would take it
Too many horror stories out there

Just buy from a trusted seller here on the forum, or from a local grey dealer with a shop you can walk into or an AD.
If you are not confident that you can spot a fake then you are best to avoid the private seller market completely.

Go to RSC with it.
Only a guy who WORKS on Rolexes regularly will tell you about what's inside.
Not a salesman.

I agree and would absolutely never trust a salespersons opinion on authenticity. One of my local ADs has a certified Rolex watchmaker in house and I would pay the $50 or whatever it costs for them to check it than be out 10k. Or go to RSC if you have one locally.

taking it to the AD is a not so good thing to do unless you really dont like the seller. The AD he bought it from will know he flipped it so its a good way to burn bridges. I would take it to another AD if you go that route but most wont authenticate anyway.

Not sticking up for flippers but in this situation he has a watch you want and otherwise you are waiting 18 months. Thats seems long though. I just think if you are going to feed the secondary market dont then screw them. Either use them and let them do what they do, or be AD only.

He might not even be a flipper (in the negative sense of the word) if he owned the watch for six months, but the AD might not see it that way.

Yes, you can cover up the details of the watch, to protect the buyer from being labelled a flipper altho 6 months is not that severe a case, and just ask someone junior there, not the manager, if this receipt is genuine. If so then with the matching serials the watch is good.

Maybe I should wait and take no chances. It is my first Rolex and I want to make sure to have a great experience!

I always wanted a Sub or GMT, but there is nothing left at my AD for those watches.

Or maybe I will find another one from good seller later...

I agree - but mostly because of the random seller without references.

The watch could have been stolen - or the guy could have lifted the pics and is luring people to rob. While not the norm, it has happened.

The AD can’t protect you from either eventuality.

Buy the Seller first.

My local AD (who is no longer a Rolex AD) told me they can not authenticate a Rolex without opening the case and they will not open the case.

My AD verified a watch when I was selling a JLC, but they would not allow me to do the actual exchange of cash within the store. The buyer and I exchanged cash at a bank nearby.
