can't believe I didn't see this post first time round ! Great post
I can see both points of view here. How many of us would have the skills to take on this type of project ?? Beats going into an AD & putting the card down !! Another area I'm interested in is motorbikes so although I always prefer the original\ unmollested examples myself - I can also appreciate when a good craftsman makes an exceedingly good job of customisation or modification to an original model !! If you've got the time to PM me the finished results - I'd be much appreciated |

As long as the end result isn't passed off as an original, it's OK by me. I would love the idea of a fixed bar, NATO-only daily wear for knocking around, but probably (myself) wouldn't go the route of making the dial look correct... I'd do it only for functionality.
This is no different than people who take 1965-66 Mustang Fastbacks and turn them into Shelby GT350 clones. If they try to pass if off as real, they are crooks, but if they just like the look, then they are fans. Yes, there will be some people who think you shouldn't chop up an original Mustang to make a clone, just as there are some people who think you shouldn't modify a Rolex to make a Milsub clone. If he was chopping up a really rare case, that's a different story. Don't turn a Shelby into a Mustang.

Subking,
I'm w/ you, in fact I'm delighted that you started this thread! It seems to me that for those of us who own Rolex watches & wish to mod for their own amusement should be allowed w/o criticism. As you may guess I've done a fair amount of it myself w/ joy. I believe the issue is modding for proffit w/ deception, this I too would not tolerate. This hobby is great fun & should continue to be so as we customize to our hearts content! There may be a contract on me soon so please allow me to see your finished Milsub prior to....I live in Mich. & would enjoy seeing your project in person...Regards mcotter |

pm's have been sent. funny how this old thread suddenly came back to life!
thanks for the kind words everyone. this watch is no more of a modded watch then the pro-hunters and project-X watches you see here on TRF and while many of the purists don't like those either, There is still a market for them. it all comes down to personal taste in the end. |

how many bmw's have a m badge on the boot and not on the log book.
same thing in my eyes ,,, i can see both sides to the coin , but its your watch do with it as you please ,,,, as long as its not to decieve ,,, and clearly its not ,,,, go ahead , i do like the idea of putting something on the dial that would scream to someone , tribute , against original ,,,, no idea what though ,, maybe a small line under the t ,,,, or T actually turning it into an I ,, for immitation , just a thought. i too would like a pic of the end result . |

Hi, SubKing. I'd love to see a picture of the final result. I'd also like to know who did the dial for you. I'm working on a similar (non-Rolex) project. Thanks!
