First Mont Blanc pen, which should I get?
I would like to purchase my first Mont Blanc pen, but not sure which model to get.
The fountain pens are nice, but I will probably use a rollerball pen more often. Not too fond of black and gold color. So a black and silver color combo is preferred. Will probably buy one of the cheaper versions. Which can you guys recommend? Also where is a good place to buy the pens online? (With international shipping) |

I have a Le Grand with platinum trim. I am very happy with it,and it might well fit your needs. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a pen without trying it first though.

Your best bet is to go to a pen store or MontBlanc boutique and check them out in person first. I have a sterling silver with black resin Meisterstuck fountain pen and a stainless steel and black resin fountain pen that I carry and use everyday. As for Europe I do not know where you can go but here in the USA there are many sellers. Once such is in New York City called the Fountain Pen Hospital, www.fountainpenhospital.com but again I do not know their international policies!!!

I have and would advise you to go with the Montblanc Meisterstuck ballpoint pen. I have black. The ballpoint is a nice all-around writing instrument. The rollerball and fountain pen versions are nice but not for all-round writing (IMO).

MB's ballpoint refills are the best of any pen I've used. If you don't want the ballpoint, I'd recommend the fountain pen over the rollerball. MB rollerballs are some of the worst I've ever used. After a short time they skip and are hard to write with. Even when the refills are new, they write very wet and the ink always bleeds through the paper.

I recently got my first Mont Blanc pen, it's a Ball Point Meisterstuck Classique Black Resin/Gold. It's a beauty! The nicest pen, I've ever written with and owned! I recommend it very much! Great for writing of all sorts! Platinum is nice too! Which ever floats your boat my friend.

one vote fo rollerball

It writes much smoother than a ballpoint and i've never had any issues using the blue or black medium refills. Paper bleed only occurs when using really poor quality paper in my experience.

The only MB that I don't have is the rollerball. I'm happy with the others. I'd go to a MB store/boutique and try them all to see what fits and makes you happy.

Regardless of brand my best advice is to get the pen you want so you will use it with pleasure and enjoyment.....always go to a pen store and check out the different brands before buying. Prices can run from as little as $15.00USD to into the stratosphere!!!

x2...I use this Boheme rollerball often, it's very comfortable and I love the way it writes. If you don't care for the paso doble' version it comes in black with any color stone you can imagine...RS

I like the Starwalker fineliner black w/ platinum trim or smaller thin the Montblanc generation black & gold ballpoint.

Another vote for the Starwalker Fine Liner. It is my favorite pen.

My Starwalker is around a year old and I found that the Fineliner ink spreads too much on uncontrolled everyday paper encounters. I've used several MB RB refills in my Starwalker and it skips at the start of my O's, Q's & g's where the 270 to 360 degree is not connected. I can stop that skip if I change the pen angle to the paper, but then the grip feels uncomfortable to my liking.
Today I got a Boheme RB and it works great with the MB RB without skipping, and I don't have to change my grip style. I use Pilot Ultrafine Gel refill's in my Starwalker and very happy with it's results. |

Here are my "User" pens, meaning that they are my non collectable ones that I write with. The most used in the Meisterstuck ballpoint pen in the middle. My favorite "user" for looks is the Cool Blue Skywalker just above. The shimmering Gulliouce under the laquer is dazzling in the light. The top is a Meisterstuck Roller Ball The 4th from the top is a SS fountain pen with Gold trim and an opal on top The bottom is a SS and green Pelican fountain pen. The fountain pens are sweet but not as user friendly Good luck they MB are lovely instruments! |

I like the classic Meisterstuk. If you don't like the original gold get the silver but I can't recommend the roller ball. I've never really liked mine and there expensive to feed. The ball point pen is a much better option imo.

One thing about MB rollerball is that they dry up very quickly. Usually if I start a refill it will be useless within 1.5-2 months just lying there (I got too many pens I don't use them all in rotation :-)

Costco sells one, at a reasonable price if I recall. It's platinum and black...think it's a rollerball, also. If you are not stuck on Monte Blanc (I have the ballpoint), you might look at Penguin or Cartier. I purchases a Cartier, retail $490, for $225 in Carmel a couple of years back. It is also a great pen. And, if you keep the cap on, a Penguin will never go dry. Good luck!
