Do I need a 5164 and a 5990.

I received a 5990 today. I also have a 5711 Blue dial. Lastly I have a ss 5164.

Do I need the 5164 after getting a 5990?

Nice collection. I’d keep the 5164, it’s different enough to the 5990 to stay in the collection.

Need? No. Can they co-exist- absolutely.

I LOVE the 5164 — is one of my favorite everyday Pateks. The 5990 is a BEAST - such an amazing watch - and a Nautilus - so can be a bit dressier.

The 5711 - would be the one ‘fighting’ for the wrist time between those three.

Same value in terms of what it can do. So I get your question

However, they are so very different aesthetically. If money isn’t an issue, I’d definitely keep it.

No but I’d keep it anyways! My favorite of your three.

Keeper...

Rubber strap - totally different vibe.

You have a wonderful Patek rotation.

Very nice

Excellent trio. I think they can all exist in a collection. If one had to go, I’d vote 5990

Unfortunately I've have these watches before. Prices were a lot more sane then but they didn't stick. .

I don't see and end for these watches going up in price. I think if PP makes a change like dial color, prices will go crazy. I'm going to try and hold on to what I have.

Also have a 5170P and a NY world time.

Same here, altho it would be hard to sell the 5711 now as so hard to get one back. Keep them all.

5164 is more of a practical travel watch. Rubber strap and more under the radar makes it better for actual travelling than the more flashy 5990 with its scratch prone bracelet.

So if I had both the 5990 would be for the office (maybe with second time zone set to the time zone of our head office in NYC) and the 5164 would be for business travel and weekends. For beach / ski vacations you would still need a Rolex or Speedie IMHO.

All three can co exist in the collection. If you want to diversify then 5711, 5164 and 5170p

On another note, I'm trying to diversify my watch collection.

I find myself with 3 Omega watches that just don't do it for me. Thoughts on other brands that aren't as costly as Patek but still great watches?

How about Rolex and Grand Seiko?

The only Omega I would keep is the Speedie "moon watch" (hesalite / solid back version), that one is a bargain given what you get (iconic history and an interesting manual wind movement that is a distant cousin to the Lemania used in the PP 5070).

For value retention Rolex's steel sports models are unbeatable, but also fairly common.

For "bang for the buck" I always found JLC excellent value for what you get: Strong horological history (including supplying all of the "Holy Trinity" with movements during the pre-inhouse era), nice finishing (although not PP level) and a diverse selection of styles to chose from including the unique Reverso line. JLCs are, however, probably best bought second hand, as they do take a hit from RRP.

Could also make sense to look into some of the indie / AHCI brands, again very good value for money and some ateliers have a higher level of hand finishing than even Patek / Lange. I am e.g. extremely happy with my Urban Jürgensen "Alfred", both aesthetically and in terms of the level of finishing of movement and case/dial/hands:

Trade the Omegas for either AP or VC

I'd keep the 5164 as I think it is far more stealthy than the 5990. And that is a very good thing when you are traveling.

Yes, keep both. They are quite different, both are very satisfying to wear.

I own both. I thought i would wear the 5990 more than the 5164 but the opposite is true. When i travel across the pond, the 5164 is just so comfortable and under the radar..
