Suggestion for a dress watch please

CJ brings up a good point. In 2015, how often will you really need a watch specific for black tie events? If you can count it with one hand, I would start with a Longines on the lower end of cost and JLC at the max. Both watches are fantastic despite the variation in price point where you pay extra for a masterfully finished (still mass produced) JLC. Getting either preowned will usually land you a mint sample at a significant discount.

Here are my picks from both brands;

Longines Presences RG

(From Google)

JLC Master Ultra Thin small seconds RG

(From JLC)

Budget? Stainless steel or precious metal?

That new IWC Portugieser 40mm in ss white dial is looking spectacular IMO. $7,250 MSRP.

If you are anything like me, my dress watches don't get used all that often so spending $20K+ on them doesn't make sense to me.

Would buy used unless you know you’re keeping forever. You can find dress watches worn just a handful of times for 30-50% less than current MSRP.

For example, a Richard Lange retails for ~32k.

David Sw has the attached one for ~19k

Lange, PP, and Vacheron would also be my choices in your price range.

If you prefer Japanese design, there are some nice Grand Seiko that could fit the bill.

I agree with jonah on an iwc. With the budget, you can get a Da Vinci Perpetual Chronograph, which is one complication short of a grand complication watch. If you truly want value for you buck, I strongly urge you consider an iwc. If you decide to through an AD they would shave a good margin for you..

When I was looking for a dress watch and I wanted gold I couldn’t find anything that came close to IWC for the price and value, I got this watch mint & complete and saved a ton off Msrp. Only problem is that I find my self wearing my Pepsi over it in almost every occasion regardless if it requires a dress watch or not. I’d part ways with it if someone gave me a decent price, someone should be enjoying this gorgeous watch.

Not a lot of wrist shots because many people find them superfluous...

For me it would come down to an ALS Saxonia or the Breguet 7147. Personally I would go with the Breguet 7147 in white gold and white enamel dial. I love this watch and hope to one day own it. Good luck in your search!

As others have already shared, at the top end of your budget, you can get a VC, ALS and Patek (preowned).

For value, under 10K, I would get the JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon. Such a nice watch.

Hope this helps.

I can only suggest the only do it all watch, the Datejust. My suggestion would be the Steel 41mm, blue dial. Jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel!

Sounds like you are not going to be wearing it too much..only for special occasions..
Probably it will end up sitting in your socks drawer 99.99% of the time..just gettin...old....and ready for expensive services..lol..
I've often thought of this too..and the Cellini is pretty tough..so you can bash it around more..worth consideration..if you are actually going to wear the thing..
No doubt the finer brands are wonderful..but..if they are going to sit around with a resale value that stinks..well..
But if you have to have PP or such....buy used w/service..as most of these dont get worn much at all..just sitters..and nice deals are out there..

I agree with most people here, when it comes to dress watches, Lange is hard to beat

Datejust 2 or datejust 41 with a fluted bezel works!

I'd buy a black OP 39mm and put an exotic leather band on it.

4. Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin
5. Rolex Cellini
6. Piaget Altiplano
7. Cartier Tank/Santos
8. Omega Aqua Terra
9. IWC Portugese
10. Longines Master or Heritage on a strap

How about Tag Heuer Monaco CS2111? A little on a cheaper side, but I always thought that it looks nice with a shirt and jacket.

Relatively inexpensive option but very good are Cartier offerings such as Tank or Ronde Solo.
JLC Reverso is excellent
