1989 Submariner. Yay or Nay

Today I meant to get a Submariner but ended up getting a vintage daytona.
My wife wants us to match for a NYE so now I must STILL get a Submariner.
An old guy here in NYC who is also an authorized repair person and who also sells authentic used rolexes was brought to my attention.

He has for sale below, a 1989 Submariner with a few imperfections, like scratches on the bezel. All the innards are authentic and he is going to show me if i show up tomorrow to buy it.

He wants 7900 for it. What do you think? See below

The dial seem to have seen water at one time…have you checked the movement and service history?

I havent yet. As I was buying the daytona the person alerted me to this guy, gave me his number and I texted him. It appears he has a great reputation.

When I texted, he responded with pics. If its worth it I may meet up with him tomorrow. Was looking to the forum to see if its even worth doing.

One of the nicest features on this reference is the glossy dial and it gets a bit lost when it has that damage. Check this one out for comparison:

True. But I do like a watch that has character and is not pristine

BTW thanks for your help. Im signing out of the forum now. There are a few very negative, cranky judgmental dudes that I dont want to deal with, so I wont be back.

thanks again.

Not really.

Most just don't want to play with a kid on the Internet with too much time on his hands.

I came back for a min to check on the response from the helpful guy here.

It is YOU who is behaving like a kid, in search of excitement.

Time on my hands? I made this account yesterday ahead of a purchase. I dont linger in forums all day because Im bored out of my skull.

It seems like the older guys in here (the ones who like to argue) have that problem.
I have two kids of my own. 5 and 3. Im 33. Im hardly a kid.
For you to assume so is convenient to your argument, and telling. Im shocked Im even allowing myself to write back to someone like you.

Today I spent over 35k on a vintage OP seen below (and one like it for reference). ive done well for myself in life and really dont like negativity and am generally happy. I dont seek out fights. Seems you do.

That said, thats the last youll get of me. I dont troll, I hate arguing and this is OVER.

I will not respond again

An old guy with tons of experience, has worked a ton with rolexes over 40 years, has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and who can be helpful where newbies cant.

You sound quite silly and snowflakey.
Old timers who arent cantankerous, are the best, from vintage watches, cars , boats, whatever, they have a wealth of knowledge.

I really wish these threads were real because I'd love to believe that you truly bought those two pieces of crap on the same day because you were too stubborn and argumentative to take the advice that was offered to you. That would be true Karma.

Is it really OVER now? Or do you want to insult more moderators and continue to demonstrate your ignorance?

hopefully you did not spend 35k on that two tone daytona, which would be way overpriced

Yes, a personal attack on the member who is attempting to provide some insight in the interest of you avoiding a less than optimal purchase based on my experience.

Got it, never mind

What a weird, rude thread, and what's up with the filthy hand with the Daytona?

Anyway, that Submariner is not a good example. The dial is shot and the case is overpolished. I'd keep looking.

thanks for your feedback. I feel 7900 is even too much for a watch (submariner) in that condition.

This was a fun read. I feel like I have seen that sub somewhere recently for sale. Weird thing about that TT Daytona and then a different gold one showing the price to the right. Seems like this was some weird troll but I'll play for fun. I like the sub with the dial damage and all. It a hard resell and overpriced when I have seen ones with good dials for similar money.

If you paid 35k for the Daytona, the sub is a bargain at 7900.

He was the new Russian Commugenista 2000 wind-up bot, sent into action to wind up we 60 somethings (its a upgrade on the old Cantankarista 2000 wind-up bot) - we shot it down though !! They are programmed to dust themselves down and reactivate in 90 days ;
