Manual vs Auto / Mickelson / golf

Hi

I've read that Phil Mickelson wears a manual wind Cellini when playing golf, and, because it is not an automatic, it can withstand the shock of his golf swing. Not sure I buy this considering all the other components in a mechanical watch; what does it matter if it's an auto wind or not?

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Since the new yacht master came out it’s the only watch I’ve seen him wearing while playing.

Both are fine to play golf in, unless you're a terrible golfer.

Pretty flimsy answers for a "tech" section.

My brother and I have had much experience over the decades with auto-wind watches. They have had years of all sorts of activities. Fishing, swimming, hiking, boating, tennis, golf, baseball, yard work, etc.
They do not get babied and we have never had an issue with any of them.
These are various Rolex and a Tudor Pelagos (an in-house movement there). I cannot speak for other brands.
I would have to say that watches have to be pretty robust in design to keep the auto-wind parts from failing. Although, they CAN on occasion, just as anything else in life.

I used to golf with mechanical watches. No longer only because of possible excess wear to the bracelet. Not a real concern for the movement. If a Rolex can't take my feeble golf swing then it wouldn't be very robust at all. To the OP's point, Mickelson's swing is very powerful. Like him, I wear Rolex and golf left handed. The similarity ends there.
