When Daytonas cost less than Sea-Dwellers, GMT IIs, Sub Dates and even Explorer IIs

It seems hard to believe, but in February 1985 the UK price list tells us just how unpopular the manual-wind Daytona was.

Compare that price with some other models which seem to have been popular for ever :

Some of my colleagues used to work for main agents, one in particular recalling his time at Pykes in Birkenhead where the Daytona had been in stock so long that it was put in the general sale...

Yes i remember those days. In fact i bought a GMT Master TT Rootbeer on a Jubilee bracelet from Pykes in Birkenhead in 1985. I think the list price was £1759 and got a discount for cash for £1399.

It’s incredible isn’t it? Looking at old Rolex paperwork and brochures makes me wish I was born in a different era!

That’s incredible. Do you still have the Root Beer? Wish times were still the same.

Rootbeer

No unfortunately, like all my Rolex, sold when my wife developed cancer to pay bills. She passed away in June 2019, life is not the same, Rolex do not seem very important any more but still the only design i really like. Maybe will win the lottery one day and i can buy myself another, who knows whats around the corner.

Actually, this makes sense. The movement was manual wind and purchased from a third party, not manufacture, lower water resistance and a smaller case and bracelet.

Love it! Makes the story of the four-digit Daytonas even more incredible.

Similar stories are rampant in the art world. Andy Warhol didn’t sell one piece at his first gallery exhibition. And in 1971, my young parents scrounged together $1500 (a lot back then) to buy three prints from Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe series. They still have them and their current value dwarfs even PN Daytonas.

As an aside, now owning a Speedmaster, it got me thinking, is it an icon against the marketing genius that was/is the Daytona?

Either way these prices were amazing.
