Guess what i stumbled on at Heathrow terminal 5?

I had meant to post this earlier but completely forgot.

So i am off to Singapore for the day on business and i decided to do some window shopping before i boarded

I walk into the Rolex store and i am approached by a gentleman. I asked if they had any SS watches (i was practically laughing) in stock. He smiled back and told me to give him a few mins. A couple of mins later he walks out with these 3. They had literally just been delivered

A quick call to my bro and a mate who had been considering the sub and GMT respectively and the deal was done 20 mins later with 20% off. i left the Yatchmaster for the next lucky person

I still don't get the lack of SS places in parts of the world. Here in Texas every AD has troves of SS pieces

Buy a Euro lottery ticket, it £113 million tonight, which was probably the odds of you walking in there and walking out with two pieces you wanted at the same time.

You Brits should visit the US for holiday more often. Help us with our economy, buy lots of stuff!

And we very nearly speak the same language, so that helps.

I hadn't realized the SS issue was so acute in the UK! So, for example, if I wanted to buy a SS sub or GMT (not BLNR, but the one with the all black bezel) and pay MSRP I couldn't just walk into an AD in the UK and do that? wow!

The whole of the UK, have waiting lists on SS models like GMT ln/blnr, Sub lv/ln and sub non date, Deepsea Blue there are less deliveries than Daytona C, lucky to get 1 per year per AD on DS Blue.
There are plenty of Air Kings and EP 2 both colours

Just Rolex creating supply and demand and if the customer fits the AD.

I was there earlier this month.

They didn't have a single SS sports stainless in stock.

I inquired about a SS Daytona. If they could shake their heads, they would have with a question like that.

Congrats! However this is a good illustration of the need for stickers when buying from an AD.

If there's such a paucity of SS pieces available in the UK, how does one get 20% off with no prior relationship with the AD? Seems to run counter to the supply and demand argument.

20% represents VAT which is not payable duty free at the airport

The U.S. dollar is very strong right now, and the UK pound (post-Brexit) is very weak. Even after the recent price correction, buying in the UK effectively comes with a nice built-in discount. End result? Popular models are easily available in the U.S. where they cost more, and hard to find in the UK where they cost less.

This is one reason why Brits don't just buy watches from the U.S. If they were willing to pay well over MSRP anyway, they could have easily found one at home.

(Also, I suspect that watch inventories in the UK are still recovering from the amazing period right after the Brexit vote when buying watches in the UK gave an even larger effective discount. Not surprisingly, stores got cleared out pretty much overnight.)

Pedant alert! Knocking the VAT off actually means a 16.66% saving, not 20%.

Sorry, carry on as you were...
