I tried the same strategy (sort of) two years ago, but was successful. Eventually.
January 2017: I called 90 small-market ADs inquiring if I could be put on the waitlist for a white dial Daytona C, and if so, what my place would be. 89 of the ADs gave me one of two responses: (i) sure, but it will be 4-8 years before my turn; or (ii) SS Daytonas are only sold to VIP / past-relationship / in-town customers. One AD—1 out of 90!—offered me to be first line if paid a small, non-refundable deposit which would applied toward the purchase. Also, I would have to pick it up in person as they don't ship SS Daytonas. No guaranteed time-table on when it would arrive, but that I would be #1. I made the deposit. October 2017: AD called and offered me the black dial Daytona that just arrived. I politely declined and thanked him, but said I'd hold off for the white. May 2018: Got the call; my grail had arrived. During my experience, I called about once a month to exchange pleasantries and gently ask for a status update. Not sure this method would still work today given how much tighter things have gotten over the past two years, but I am proof that the smile-and-dial method has worked at least once! |

About a month ago I was in the market for a new 116610LN. Called every AD in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, West Virginia and DC. I explained I was a cash buyer for personal use and was not a flipper.
Not a single NEW Submariner Date in stock. A few tried to get me to come in and look at used ones. Most were not even accepting new names onto their waiting lists. Not being a patient person, two calls and 36 hours later I had a "new" 116610LN on my arm from DavidSW. |

Haha yeah my ADs say they literally get a dozen calls a day from people all over the world. It’s like hunting a unicorn. Sadly, they don’t even entertain the calls, even if they had a watch available. They usually get held for local returning customers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
