Fair point - please don't think I'm hating on the BLNR, I'm not, I like all Rolex sports models.

Yeah. I'm going to have to say none of the things you've mentioned even remotely bother me.

Perhaps you would be happier with another watch.

Honest review. Don’t think they are deal breakers for most but for some they are legit concerns

I would love the super jubilee for my 166710. How much does that cost?

Agree Mathias but 5 mm is way too much for me. My wrists don't change in size through the day the equivalent of an entire link, just a mm at a time, which is why the glidelock is so perfect. There's also a psychological component when you know you have a feature you can use to solve your problem anytime and that makes me tolerate a little bit more. With the asked price for these watches I need perfection.

Can you explain this issue? I think I have this issue, but wanted to confirm that it's the same issue you're referring to. Sometimes, when I pull the crown out to the 3rd position, the second hand doesn't hack (stop), but if I move the turn a crown a bit, the second hand eventually hacks. Is this the issue you're referring to? I was wondering if this was just my watch or common in the GMT IIc watches. Thanks

I like the GMT model but find the blue/black bezel a little "precious" for a tool watch. Purely my taste I know.

I think you're issue is different than his, but my 2-3 month old BLNR has the same issue as yours. Not worried about it.

Nice observations, i have many Rolex’s and my Batmans pointy edges are so sharp they have scratched my wife a couple times. Now i only wear it at the office and first thing when I get home, take it off and put a different rolex on. It’s realy the only flaw I’ve found on any of Rolexes and shocked they are not correcting this, having said that, there must be a good explaination and I’m sure rolex has its reasons.

I’ve had my Sub C for about 5 years now. I wouldn’t be able to own a BLNR because I can’t stand PCL’s, dial is too busy with GMT hand, bezel has too much going on and doesn’t feel as solid when turning as Sub C bezel, lack of glide lock. Black Sub perfect everyday watch for a one and only collection IMHO.

that only thing that bothers me is point 4. I also have hard time pulling the crown to 3rd position.

Agreed. The 16710 was my favorite Rolex and the one I regret letting go. Not a huge fan of the new ceramic bezels or wide lug cases.

But they're fairly mild complaints, the original OP never said he hated it, just listed his issues with it. They're fair enough to have.

Everyone loves their watch when they first purchase it; those reviews are sincere but usually lack depth and maturity. How many ultimately get flipped? Probably quite a few.

Then you've got the haters. Nitpicking everything about a watch they've never owned and never will. Perhaps a valid opinion, but hardly an informed review.

And then you've got the OP's review. He's owned the watch long enough to see the perceived shortcomings and describe them well, yet continues to express positive feelings for the timepiece.

That's a review worth reading.

Agreed!

I love this forum and it's been a font of so much knowledge for me, as I try to carve out an opinion of whether to indulge in a Rolex next year. But one observation is that when someone posts a picture of a watch to start a thread, usually the only comments are compliments! That creates a wonderful and very welcome atmosphere, but sometimes, lacks a little critical thinking or analysis. And considering the deep and unbelievable knowledge of this forum, it's sometimes a shame more heated discussion is not encountered.

Nothing is never perfect, Rolex being one of them and it's cool to hear critical but reasoned discussion over flaws, whether it's subjective or objective.

I thought it was a great post on a great forum. :)

the OP is a pilot
“- Lume is fairly weak, only bothers me when I'm flying overnight and the lights are off in the cabin
- In addition to the above, the GMT arrow is extremely hard to find when it's dark. It virtually disappears when lume is faint and whenever sits on top of an hour marker.

Many save for years to buy a Rolex, and when posting about finally acquiring their dream watch, be hardly fair to criticise it

Although you read enough and you soon find out what the Forum vibe is, such as two tone watches (except Bluesy) and the Yachtmaster II not being that popular, but still respecting the owners choice

Lume on mine shines brightly all night from a brief 20 seconds charge over a light bulb. My Daytona lume is quite poor by comparison though.

Never been a problem reading the time on my GMTIIc in any lighting condition.
Lume is bright enough when it really matters.
That being said, having a torch attached to your wrist while in a darkened cockpit or a ship's bridge is not exactly practical.
The "disappearing" GMT hand is hardly a new issue as it's something both 5 and 6 digit references share in common.
As Adam wrote, it's always easier to turn a light on and most practical applications of UTC / GMT such as astronomical calculations do require some light source.
My only criticism after three years of ownership is towards the 24click bezel. Can't track the odd time zones.
But still this is in line with the watch's true spirit as an instrument which is meant to track zone description rather than legal time.

great post by the OP, clearly he has decided that overall he accepts the issues and is happy with the watch.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable, if you’re paying the fat end of $8000 for a stainless steel watch from high quality manufacturer, that you expect it to work fairly flawlessly.

I have the 216570, it doesn’t wind particularly smoothly for an $8k watch and pulling out the crown to the 3rd position takes much more force than moving it from first to second.
In the grand scheme of things, those are not everyday operations, so i live with it.
It’s still a bit shoddy though.

I see my BLNR as a good all-around watch. It's a mix of jewelry and functionality.

For better finishing, I would look at Grand Seiko and Patek

For max functionality, this would be my choice

I like the honesty of the thread. A REAL perspective. Most of these threads are something like " I finally got a BLNR. It's unbelievable. It is surely a future collectible and the greatest watch ever made"
