Icon5 One for the boys - holiday that is!

Hi all,

Seeing as you are all well-travelled I wondered if anyone had any recommendations on a lads holiday?

It will be for 6 guys all celebrating our 40th birthdays and ideally we were looking for a little adventure mixed in with the general debauchery that comes from guys-on-tour (who all like a beer or three). Some people within the group have mentioned Vegas or a sunshine type beach getaway , however we are all in agreement it would be nice to make it memorable as we have all grown up together i.e. a couple of days activity either getting to the destination or whilst there (road trip, shooting, kayaking, river rafting etc.).

Given our age I am not sure the usual suggestions of Amsterdam/Ibiza hit the sweet spot so has anyone experienced something a bit more “off the wall” for up to 10 days?

P.S. it is fair to say partying is massively on the cards so ideal locations will still have pubs/clubs nearby.

Forgot to mention we are UK based, however we are up for a bit of travelling so Europe, Caribbean, Virgin Islands, USA and Asia could still be on the cards.

Fly into Miami - 2-3 days there. Then hire a few nice muscle cars and drive down to key west. When there you have diving, jet ski, game fishing etc.

Plenty of nightlife and things to do.

If you want shooting then lots of places you can rent whatever your budget caters for in mainland FL, but they do charge quite a premium for the service.

Miami to Key West isn't a bad idea at all. That could be a debauchery-filled vacation (ahem, "holiday" as you guys like to say). I'd stay away from Vegas, but that's just me. There's nothing there that I'd wanna do (I don't like strip clubs, gambling, or cocaine, and it can be mercilessly hot). You'll never have a bad time in NYC (my home city). There are a lot of beaches around, but if you're looking for a "college spring break" level of fun, I'd say Miami to Key West is a good bet.

I haven't been, but I would go to New York. Nearer to home? London is fabulous, we go for a couple of days 2 or 3 times a year.

Look at Cyprus as well. Berlin is brilliant.

Thanks for the replies. We all love New York but as we have all been previously we wanted to try something new.

London is our stomping ground so we are plenty familiar with the delights this can offer

Miami down to the keys definitely sounds interesting so will start looking into this - thanks!

South FL is great. Miami can be a little in your face but adding in a trip down to the keys (Key West or one of the others) can provide some much needed balance. If you plan on driving down, just be ware that it is not a quick trip. You'll be on the road for 4 hours, possibly 5 with weekend traffic.

Once you're there, life is great and you'll have a blast. There is tons to do with a trip like this. Rent some scooters or bikes to get around and go have fun!

Miami is nice, Vegas is an adult playground. Koh Phi Phi is also fun. You mentioned debauchery, so Vegas it is! Dare we mention the variety of things that are legal there?

Another vote for the Miami / Key West run. Flat out fun in the sun. Make the driving happen mid week.

Mallorca?

Ibiza?

A neighbor (Hot German) has been going to Ibiza since her 20’s and even now as a 45 year old mom with three kids they still have a blast. However, she has mentioned that they now purposefully avoid the debauched elements of the island.

Mykonos?

Otherwise - I'd do a Caribbean island.

If in the winter, Barcelona + skiing at Pas de la Casa makes for a pretty good one-two punch.

Vegas really has something for everyone. If you or a few in the group haven't gone it's a surreal experience. Great dive bars, the clubs, the restaurants, endless shows. It's a trip. However anything more than 3 days could put a frivolous person in the poor house or a coma.

To make two experiences out of one, and since to mentioned water sports check out driving from LV to Lake Mead or better Lake Powell (4 hrs). You can rent a house boat and jet skis, explore all day and BBQ on the boat/beach every night. For a group from the UK seeing something like Horseshoe Bend or the view from Alstrom Point would be one in a million.

I love that movie and I think he turns 39 too. The Miami to keys trip sounds like a great adventure.

10 days is a looooooong time to be in Vegas. I’m ready to go at 5 MAX. If you decide on Vegas I would mix it in with another trip elsewhere like the pacific coast or Scottsdale

I agree with those who said Miami. Plenty of variety. Can be as exciting or as chill as you want it to be. It’s a good launching spot for other adventures (the Keys, USVI, or Bahamas). Great restaurants and hotels.

I’ve never done it but I have friends who’ve flown in to St Thomas (or any other Caribbean island and they charter a catamaran for a week or so. You can hire a captain and crew pretty affordable for a big group. You make your own itinerary and crash whatever beach bar you want

Thought I would report back on progress...

Group consensus was definitely the good old US of A and we have decided on flying into San Francisco with a road trip to Las Vegas.

We have looked at dates and can all do March 10-20th, however looking at the average temperatures it looks like it might be a little chilly. Coming from the depths of winter in old blighty we really wanted to remind ourselves what the sun looks like, so can any of our American brethren advise on whether this is a good time to visit?

Any "Californians" on here?

March is a little on the cold side in SF. Vegas can be 70's. We were there this March, the pool was bearable until the sun disappeared. They're still spring skiing Tahoe in March.

Depending on how long you're planning on spending and where, LA or San Diego are only a 4 hour (traffic dependent) drive from Vegas. Be a nice way to break up the cooler March temps in Las Vegas.

Sounds interesting - and a lot of FUN!

We are travelling for 10 days, starting in San Fran and ending in Vegas, so what would your ideal road trip be (with the lads)?

Liking the ideal of visiting the city, road trip to Tahoe/Mammoth Mountain and some skiing, then another road trip down through Death Valley into Vegas.

Having never been there it looks feasible on a map but if any locals have any other ideas I am all ears

If ending in Vegas, you’ll be there for primetime March Madness, if you’re into college basketball at all. Should be a fun time.

It may not be hot, but sun should be out.

I was thinking the same, but when I looked it up I didn't see Las Vegas as a host city for 2020??

I’m talking about watching the games in the sports book or bar. It’s a great atmosphere.
