Help - DJ malfunction

Hi friends, newb here. I just got my first DJ (brand new) and within a few months of regular wear, it seems to be malfunctioning. It's running about 25 seconds/day fast and when i try to wind it, there is resistance and then a hard vibration. I'm under warranty, so I will be reaching out to get it fixed, but I wanted to know if there are any words of wisdom before I ship it off for service. Thanks!

If you are winding after it has completely stopped running, sometimes you can feel the rotor vibrate slightly but not a big deal. 25 seconds fast? Is that a lot??

Hi and welcome to TRF. Congrats on acquiring the DJ. I love the DJ, but I am a bit biased as I own one myself. A 1975 1603 Beaut! You didn't mention whether the DJ was purchased new or if it is a pre-owned one. Anyway, since it's under warranty, you should certainly have it serviced. 25 seconds fast just doesn't cut it for a Rolex. I wouldn't try winding it anymore because it sounds as though there is definitely something amiss inside the movement. Let's hope it isn't anything drastic, but as long as it gets to a certified watchmaker (whether it's at RSC or a local), they'll get it back to the high standards you expect from a Rolex. Good luck

25 seconds fast, or 25 seconds per day?

25 seconds over the course of a couple weeks is within reason. 25/day, that’s very fast.

The watch was purchased new 3 months ago and it's 20-25 seconds per day.

25 seconds a day is really fast

It’s supposed to be plus or minus 2 seconds if it’s a new Datejust

I think you’re making the right decision to get it checked since you’re not satisfied by the watch’s performance and odd sensation during winding. Good luck and hope you get it back sooner rather than later

Isn't this often a symptom of a magnetized movement?

Yes. Take good pics of the case and bracelet so you have proof when you say to RSC: "That ding/scratch wasn't there when I sent it to you."

I've never had anything serviced so this is great advice. Thank you!

was going to see my local dealer/jeweler this week to see if they can demagnetize for me but I'm still concerned about that vibration.

I think the speeding up part is, not the vibrations and resistance while winding though

I would doubt if your watch is magnetised how are you testing your watch as its very strange for any Rolex to run 25 seconds fast. And if your watch has the 32 series movement the noise you are hearing is the ball bearing rotor which is quite normal. Before you rush out try this first set time with a reliable source a quartz watch will do thats accurate enough. Give your watch a full manual wind say around 40 crown turns clockwise only. Then wear your watch as normal but for 8 hours a day, if you take it off at night rest watch in the same resting position.Check time once daily from the same reliable setting source write down the loss or gain do this daily over a week then average out the loss or gain. Now if your watch is out of the COSC spec AVERAGE- 4 to +6 seconds daily or way over the -2+2 new in-house spec. Then you should have it checked out perhaps needs regulation or something simple to much or to little oil on escapement parts.

That’s why I asked, I have no idea, I have a few different watches so rarely wear them two days in a row. I guess 25 seconds off and vibrating is a significant issue then. The best to the OP...

It’s alright. I’ve asked questions too and learned a lot on this forum.

Have a good one!

Do you wind your watch often? If so, why?

Sounds like the mainspring is slipping. When you get it tight, it suddenly spins causing a quick vibration as it unwraps. This would also account for lack of torque and a low amplitude that would make it run fast.

Might be something simple, but you need a watchmaker to make it right. Use that warranty, that's what it's for.

You say you bought the watch brand new, I presume that this is from an AD. If this is the case then I would revisit the AD with the watch and go through the issues that you have been having. If the watch needs to be adjusted the AD can arrange this under warranty.
