DIY tropical dial?
Would it be silly to leave a Sub in the hot Dubai sun on purpose to get a tropical dial? What are your thoughts?

weren't tropical dials as much to do with the older painted dials themselves, so would this work with a modern rolex?
Or do you mean trying to tropical a vintage piece? |

Think it is the type of finish/paint used on the dial at the time. Give it a go and report back

If you can afford it, which it sounds like you can, I think that’s a pretty cool idea Although what I would recommend is to buy a separate dial, hands and bezel insert, leave those in the sun for like a year and then check back I wouldn’t do the whole watch just in case it dries out the oils and stuff Unless you plan on winding it every two days or so |

You need to remove the dial and with a q tip apply lemon on it and UV light (like they use in nail salons)

I agree with schoolboy. Buy and do it to a new dial, hands and insert.

Why do it. If you really want to try it, disassemble the watch, take out the dial, put it in an isolated clean container so it doesn't get dirty and add lots and lots of UV lighting in there. I don't personally think it is worth it, but if you want to give it a go, I'd do that. That way your movement won't dry out and you won't get spots under stationary hands. Oh and you won't have to leave the watch out for long, it will be inside, in a container, aging (or not if modern dials don't age) 24/7/365, not just day time, when it's not raining or cloudy.

Picked up 2 identical enamel Panerai-style painted dials and attached one to a fencepost to see how it would age. No changes whatsoever after 2+ years in extreme Texas weather, which was a surprise.
Point being is that I highly doubt modern Rolex dials would be affected by UV exposure, hot or cold, etc. |

I like it. Run it for the next five years and do a time lapse. We will all be here still and would love to see the result. Maybe a few references too. But, make sure you are wearing one too.

Anything will eventually be affected by the sun. It's a matter of whether or not it's worth the time/energy/money to find out by leaving your watch in the sun for years. |
