The Official “Unpopular” Milgauss Owners Club

I noticed that the lightning handed Rolex step child didn’t have one and figured it deserved one.

Ever hidden in its more popular sibling’s shadows, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Milgauss was first produced as the Ref. 6541 in 1956 (some contest the Ref. 6543 in 1954) and supplied to CERN scientists who worked in highly magnetic laboratory environments thus sealing the historical relationship between them and Rolex.

(Source: Chrono24)

The Ref. 6541 would be discontinued shortly and re-emerge as the Ref. 1019 in 1960. However, this iteration of the Milgauss would be missing several features from the previous model, most notably the lightning seconds hand which had now been replaced by a straight hand tipped with a red triangle. Despite the new design, the 1019 remained unpopular and would eventually be discontinued yet again.

(Source: Chrono24)

Then in 2007, the Rolex Milgauss would yet again make a reappearance in its third and current iteration as the Ref. 116400. This time featuring an aesthetically innovative green tinted sapphire crystal and once again, the prominent lightning seconds hand.

(Source: Rolex)

Still considered unpopular among Rolex aficionados for various reasons, there are still those who regard the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Milgauss with delight. This thread is dedicated to former, current and future Milgauss owners. Do share stories and pictures of your Rolex Milgauss for everyone to enjoy.

BTW. Here is mine. In it’s home environment.

If they still made the 6541, I'd buy one. The new has just too much high polishing. If it was more brushed, I'd consider one.

6543 is probably one of my grail references. I've handled a couple and they are amazing.

I won’t say I hate it but if I ever took too much viagra and had an erection lasting more than 4 hrs, to save time I wouldn’t get in my car to seek medical attention as recommended I would just look at a Milgauss.

This as opposed to when I look at a 6541 I see Venus Di Milo in mechanical form.

I will say that Rolex deviated big time from its SOP of slowly making incremental changes to a model.

Going from 6541 to the 1019 was Rolex’s attempt at disguising the 6541 for undercover duty or something.

Maybe they felt they had to distinguish it from the submariner.

I think with a little imagination they could tweak the 6541 so that it would not be mistaken for a sub or sea dweller. Different numbered bezel, different color triangles, different hour markers and Milgauss in Red and of course that amazing honeycomb dial.

If they do that I think the Milgauss would be a top seller for them. I know I would buy one in a heartbeat.

The Milgauss is a particularly special watch to me. Long story short, it's the watch that got me into watches. I stumbled upon it in college ogling Rolexes in Tourneau with some friends. The dial, the crystal, the second hand, I could never get it out of my head.

I spent years wishing I could purchase one, but a bad relationship prevented me from doing so. Finally, earlier this year I received my very first promotion. I'm admittedly sentimental, but I knew exactly what I wanted. I finally got the Milgauss I'd wanted for years, a celebration of my success and a symbol of hope and hard work in my life. It may be the red-headed step child of the Rolex lineup, but I wear it with pride.

(I unfortunately can't post pictures from my work computer, but I'll post one when I get a second)

The most complimented watch I’ve ever owned is the Zblue. All of the milgauss watches are unique and stunning in their own way. I would love to own them all!

I briefly owned a black dial (non-gv) which I absolutely loved. The Milgauss is a fantastic watch, and should be recognized as such!

This is almost my exact same story. Unfortunately, it was a slipperly slope after that. In the following 18 or so months, I then purchased a Hulk and Tudor GMT. This hobby is too damn expensive.
