Driving vs flying.

So I'm spending my time in Oregon this week.

We live in Denver, and decided to make the 23 hour drive.

Just last summer we drove to Portland Maine, covered something like 4 thousand miles in 2 weeks.

This got me thinking, how many of you are like me, enjoy the drive somewhere vs flying? For me, if its not a family emergency, I will drive it every time.

What car do you guys tend to use for road trips? I brought my Subaru STI. I will say it is fun, but man does she love fuel.

We are alike my friend! Road trips are very relaxing to me. I feel at home behind the wheel. I just returned from a trip from buffalo to miami. I regularly drive 6-10 hours for weekend excursions.

My car of choice is my 4runner but I have a land cruiser on a boat headed this way. I think it will be a very good road trip vehicle

We (our small family) make 3 to 4 big road trips a year. Usually SF to Canada for summer fun and winter skiing. Would take driving over flying any day of the week. Great pics and enjoy your trip!

I enjoy both but I like flying a bit more. Something about being 30,000 feet up in the air away from it all and watching the clouds go by or reading a good book is really relaxing to me. I usually base my decision on what makes more sense from a cost/time perspective. I recently took a road trip from Atlanta to Maine and back though and it was a lot of fun.

I used to drive a lot. Lived in Houston and work in Colorado and Wyoming . 1100 miles in 1 day. Not anymore... last time I drove this distance was from California to Houston a couple years ago... now I fly most of time.

I'll fly when I have to but road trips are the way to go for me. 2 or 4 wheels will do it. Usually plan my route around golf courses I want to stop and play on the way. If you bungee your golf bag to the rear seat on the bike it acts like a back rest. Adds a few days but what a way to spend the time.

Fly everywhere....... If I had more time or a car that suited maybe the other would apply, as a kid we drove everywhere a lifetime in the backseat with 2 other siblings before in car entertainment put me off for life.

I guess it depends upon how far you're going. We're flying to Disneyhell this May, don't want to waste half our vacation in the car.

For vacations I try to drive. You see a lot more when you drive. And if you get off the interstate, you have a good chance of seeing things that make your trip special.

I'm not a huge fan of long drives I prefer to get where I'm going as quickly as possible and enjoy my time there.

If time and logistics permit, I prefer driving over flying. Parking, and total travel time is how I usually compare the travel modes. A 3 hour flight often requires 5 hours of total travel time, and possibly a rental car or taxi/Uber cost and time.

My favorite drive is DC to NYC.

Typically we fly.

But we recently decided any vacations we plan will now be road trips. We love to be in the car. I love to drive. And this way we have more freedom to do what we want.

Most important we get to bring the dogs.

I get where you’re coming from, driving can be relaxing.

Having said that, I prefer the train wherever possible. You see the same landscapes without the effort of driving. You can enjoy a beverage and watch the world go by

Anything under 8 hours, I prefer to drive. Easier to load up the SUV and take the dogs. Beyond that, flying.

It depends on the distance and the time we are staying. If more than 6-7 hours I look at flying depending on connections vs direct flight. It also depends on how much gear I need and what it would cost to rent when we are there. I always thought I wanted to drive across the country and return. A friend did this when he retired and made it one way and shipped his car back to the east coast and got on a plane. Said it almost cost him his marriage as he and the wife had too much time together. Funny story but I may give it a try sometime.

There are benefits and trade offs for each mode of travel. I fly 1st class so air was always first choice for trips beyond 3 hours. But....

As air travel and rental car quality has become less predictable - and impatient flyer orneriness more likely - my algorithm is heavily weighted towards driving despite the lower safety factors.

If I'm with my family, driving. If I'm alone, flying.

Man, I won’t even drive to Vegas from San Diego. That said, my wife and I did take a road trip up to Paso Robles two summers ago. We drove up along the coast but traffic made this a 6 hour drive. Coming back we took the less scenic inland route on the 5 freeway and it only took 4 hours to get home.

It was a great trip though and I want to do it again.

I fly there, then rent a Suburban and drive with the family -- best of both worlds! :-)

To me the choice is all about the math. I'm 2 hours from the airport + a 2 hour early checking + flight time + the time it takes from that airport to my ultimate destination. If driving is within and hour or two of that math then I'll drive.

Too many variables to consider to have a standard rule of thumb.

If it's within a 6-8 hour drive, I'll do that rather than fly.

Me, too, although we do tend to drive to NYC fairly often (never fly) and we are planning a long cross country driving trip for our 50th anniversary sometime this fall.

I used to do major road trips when I was young and single.

Now with kids, I have just resumed long road trips as the girls are old enough to sit still for 4-5 hours without going bonkers. I generally like to limit daily driving to 5-6 hours max. Beyond that, I feel like I am simply working rather than enjoying the trip.

That is always a factor with my crew as well. Everyone in my family has dogs

People will be like you drove here from where? I can then use my dog as an excuse when really I just prefer to drive.

Driving vs flying.

I like to get to the destination and maximize my time there. While I enjoy driving, I feel like i waste 1-2 days of vacation in the car.

Also, I have a small plane so I try to take this thing everywhere. It is the best of both worlds! I get there faster, but I am still in control. I can stop as much as I want, but I get to avoid the major airports, parking, traffic, and security.
