Officer down Buffalo PD

Police Officer Craig Lehner drowned while conducting a training a dive in the Niagara River, in the area of Broderick Park and Bird Island Pier last Friday.

Members of the agency's Underwater Recovery Team were conducting a regularly scheduled training exercise in swift water currents. Officer Lehner entered the water as part of the training but failed to surface after his safety cable broke while he was submerged.

Officer Lehner's body was recovered on October 17th, 2017, during a massive recovery effort involving over 20 local, state, federal, and Canadian law enforcement agencies.

Officer Lehner was a veteran of the Army National Guard. He had served with the Buffalo Police Department for nine years and was assigned to the Canine Unit. He is survived by his mother and sister.

Godspeed brother, may you rest in peace.

That's terrible. The current is very swift there as it lies at the mouth of the niagara river. I ride my sea doo through there regularly and the water is fast and choppy. I always hold on tight during that stretch as I wouldn't want to fall in there. RIP

RIP Officer Lehner. Living in the area I can say that is the worst part of the river. The current is very fast and strong. I avoid that part of the river unless on a big boat. Even then it’s bad. I couldn’t imagine diving there. I’m afraid to ride Sea Doo’s for fear of falling in. Rest well Officer.

Heartbreaking news, the man was training to be a better first responder and it cost him his life. He put it all on the line just get better at his job and now he's gone. Truly tragic, my sympathies to his friends, family and co-workers. They all must be devastated especially since this was caused by a simple equipment failure.

RIP - The training for dangerous rescues is as tough as the rescues themselves. Prayers and thoughts for the family and friends who must make it through the tough days ahead.
