Thanks everyone for the advice.

The seller was insistent that everything was original , he actually went on so say that the short-fat hands were the original and the long was the service.

The majority opinion is the longer minute and second hands, extending into the minute track, are original for the 1016 and the shorter Submariner hands were common service replacements (ran out of 1016 hands?). One member posted recently that short hands were original to the 1972 model year 1016 and claims back-up research as well as owning his 1972 since new!?
