Some people have deeper pockets while some don't
These people with deeper pockets think that prices above srp are still cheap Thus the existence of more and more resellers who sell at a premium because there are buyers who are willing to pay for it |

I have to agree. It's no one else's business what you choose to spend your money on. Some people can afford the premium, others can't. It's as simple as that.

You sound stupid, Why do you care how others spend their money? I buy all my watches from Ad's because thats what i can afford. If i was a millionaire sure ill buy from the grey market since money is no object.

I agree with OP. Unfortunately though, Rolexes have turned from being well constructed tool watches to just status symbols for rich. My father worn an Air King for 50+ years. It was not a status symbol but just a well made watch that he could use to tell the time. It was given to him as a gift and he could care less about the brand. Seems like too much elitism now with buying Rolexes these days. It’s so sad.

For what it’s worth I regret the thread title.
It does though help identify those that didn’t read the OP.

Agree with the OP. People can ultimately do whatever they want with their money... actually I think those who pay the premium seem to be those who truly want the watch... at any cost.
Also, I'm in no way associated with any grey or trusted resellers, but I don't understand the negative cogitation people have towards these groups. DavidSW as example gets the most praise and rightfully so, but there are a lot of other watch resellers that are upstanding as him... But for some reason, like I've said it before, people tend to group the majority of resellers or grey as individuals who sell shady goods out of a back of a truck. It's a hobby for us. It's a business for others. Many are conflicting hobby vs. a business. It applies to all industries: automotive, real estate, watches. We live in a capitalistic society but are giving socialistic opinions since its "our hobby". And for some reason if its our hobby, people seem to think that a collector should get a watch over other individuals. We might want to see that, but that is not how it works. Yes, there are flippers - those fly-by-night individuals who come in to gain a buck or two and disappear. I hope we can phase those individuals out. But a lot of greys and resellers are not those flippers. They are actually no different than vintage watch shops (but rather selling modern pieces). Most I've dealt with or read about are operating legitimate businesses and providing a service far superior than ADs (most of the time). Frankly a lot of ADs were probably once resellers or greys at some point who have decided to apply for a license or franchise of a specific brand. Some choose not be an AD so that they can sell multiple brands without the hassle of dealing with the mothership. But anyways, this is just my 2 cents. |

Although, I would never pay over retail, yet i say anyone can do whatever and pay how much ever they want over retail. In the end its their money, their business and then eventually Their watch. Kind of silly to say people paying over retail are idiots in other words these people are fools feeding the grey sharks. But hey its their money, they can do whatever they want, who the hell are u and me to judge. And paying over retail not only applies to the watch industry, theres more such industries. Shoes, bags, etc.......
In the end, its a business to fulfill and satisfy the needs of watch enthusiasts. Simple as that. |

That a Rolex is a toolwatch is a myth! Never was and never will be - maybe for 0.01% of the buyers in all times!

The price is driven by the "gotta have it" mentality. Oh look, same as the black one but bezel is half blue...I need one of those too.
It's know as irrational behavior in certain circles. If you go to the fish market and they are out of salmon, do you say oh I guess I'll buy tuna or maybe swordfish or do you run out onto the sidewalk and start screaming "I will pay a thousand dollars for 3 pounds of salmon, I must have salmon" Me...I go for the swordfish (that's the Explorer I in this story). |

Free market. People should be free to do whatever they want. If they want to pay 20K for a Daytona and that's what it's worth to them, they have every right to vote with their wallet. If you are only willing to pay MSRP, that's your prerogative too, but maybe there should be a recognition that it's below the true market price and is an artificial price set by Rolex, hence there is the song and dance, hoops you have to jump through to get that deal. People put value on their time and enjoyment, and I can see why would pay more just to enjoy now, as you never know what may happen tomorrow.
I hate it when others feel like they have to dictate to others what they should or shouldn't do with their watches. I always find it a little rich that people begrudge the grey market or high resale prices, especially as it is a force that helps make you feel better or justify your purchase more. |

As I have said numerous times. This forum used to be more about the watches themselves and how they pertain to the lifestyle and the hobby that so many of us love. Now the focus has been shifted to economics. Whatever the reason and however we view it all, it’s definitely a negative development. I contribute to many other forums and on none of these is the focus so much on the economics as here....

All four of my watches are from a very large grey. I also paid under msrp for them all and carefully contemplate paying over. I won’t do it on something like a datejust but would likely get a Pepsi at 15k. I can’t do the AD dance. Not in me.

I really like the angle that people paying the grey prices are the ones helping the value retention. Never thought of it that way but it makes absolutely perfect sense.
What is good for the goose is good for the gander. From now on I am going to emphatically encourage everyone to buy from the grey! |

3 years ago, AD was way to go but Rolex has _changed_ the rules of the game, for many especially the 1st timer, AD for the 1st purchase of SS sport is almost unfeasible. Now it's either paying premium at TS or just wait for a watch that may never arrives.
Modern Rolex SS sports has become classic Rolex in a way for many that can't acquire it straight from an AD, you buy it used/2nd hand. |

It is considered by many foolish to pay $10,000 for any watch.

I don't care what others do with their money, but when they ask us what we think, are we supposed to ignore the "CFO in our heads" that think they overpaid? Why ask if you don't want feedback?
