Rolex New 42mm Yachtmaster - Thoughts?

I see very little discussion of this model in this forum. Nobody interested? I quite like the larger size and from website pictures, a lot of details on the bezel as well with that greyish black metallic tone. But of course have to see actual to be sure.

I asked my Rolex AD who has grown fond of telling me any Rolex sports model is "I'll try but I can't promise"...blah X 3 about the availability of this model, but in this case, they just said "Sure, let you know when it arrives". Hmm...

My guess is because it's expensive and in WG and not SS.

Not a huge fan of white gold but otherwise I really like it. That bezel is awesome.

The hands ruin it for me. I'm not interested in WG on OF anyway, but even if I were, those hands would be a deal breaker, since the mismatch makes them aesthetically unpleasing, and is indicative of a brain fart on the part of the designers.

Regarding your AD's response, it makes sense: the YM has never been a huge seller, and WG models tend to slow movers, as well. This is slow on slow.

It's basically RG yachtmaster in WG with less flair and more metal from the size. Surely it doesnt look bad at all, but at that price it better be more than "not bad." Im sure a lot of peeps are put off by the $27k pricetag.

Could have been a total hit if it was SS...a missed opportunity imo

You are correct, if it was in SS there would be a much greater demand.

The price is beyond the majority of Rolex buyers, plus it is WG on a historically slow model. These combinations make it a hard time for me to predict long waiting list in the future.

SS will be a totally different story. However I believe Rolex has no plan in the foreseeable future to produce any Oysterflex SS, all will be PM.

At that price I'm getting a Daytona ceramic on OF. Any daytona ceramic at that....

I think it looks nice. I love the black/white/silver color scheme but rubber straps are not my thing. Wouldn't buy one even in SS.

Definitely is an attractive watch. If it was offered in SS I think a lot more people would be going ga-ga over it.

I just watched this hands-on ABTW video, just realized the new Y-M has a shortened Glidelock clasp on the OF. (Somehow I missed the announcement until now.) According to the Rolex website, the RG YM has the Glidelock, too, but the TT and Rolesium versions still have Easylink. This is the first non-diver to feature Glidelock at all, to say nothing of a shortened version. I wonder if this is a glimpse of things to come...although the fact we have a whole new generation of GMTs without it makes me think Rolex is going to be stingy with it

Glidelock demonstration at 0:30

I love the look. In fact, I strongly prefer it to the current Sub. If it were 40mm and SS, I would have ordered one.

I like it, but at the price point, it would really have to blow me away to be a buyer.

I'd like to understand the criticism (fair or unfair) as well.

I mean, it's not like the dial aside from the text is different from the GMT II black dial really; but that's not being called out.

Help us out please.

I think it’s that the minute hand is much thinner than the hour hand.

I am not a fan of the YM in any iteration. I don’t understand the watch. As a tool watch its use makes no sense to me other than it’s a weird submariner want to be. I really don’t get the cost upswing either. Ok WG is more but there is a cheap rubber strap on this watch.

The hour hand is proportionally much larger - on a scale with the 42mm Explorer II - relative to the minute hand, which is skinnier, like the YM40. The lume disc on the seconds hand is also large, again like the Exp. II. Total mismatch.

Here's a screen grab from the ABTW video. OP's rendering shows YM40-proportioned hands on the YM42, but that's not correct.

Not an attractive watch to me and a rubber strap on PM is silly.
