No One Cares if You Buy a Rolex

Interesting little article that I stumbled upon. Just wanted to share with you all.

The comment section is also interesting.

Rolex is made in Switzerland, not China. The author sounds like more of a dousche than some Rolex owners who personify the stigma he refers to. If you play your cards right, you can take your Rolex on the experiences you have.

Sounds like he bought one for the wrong reasons.

Am I missing something here? How do you even just loose a “real” Rolex anyway? And not seem to care.

I think he wants to sound cool or just to confirm he cannot remember where he leaves a watch when he takes it off !

I bought my 5513 Submariner at 23 in 1970 during a six week wandering vacation through Europe right out of college. I had seen them in the Marshall Field's jewelry case in Chicago since I was a senior in high school and thought they were the most beautiful watch in the world. It never "changed" my life. It was on my wrist through graduate school and my bachelor years. It brings back great memories of all the places we we have been together during those great times in the 70's.

I'm a little confused. Maybe rich kid spending mom and dad's easy money, douche.
Or, not rich kid, trying to pretend he has money, thus the fake Rolex that was a "mistake", douche.
Either way, I lost a few minutes of my life exploring a douche.

Not once in my life have I ever bought anything for a reason other than that I wanted it (because I liked or loved it.) I own a Rolex because it is an incredible timepiece. I am actually uncomfortable with the idea of trying to impress anyone with anything material.

I agree with his main message ( I think) that you shouldn't buy a Rolex (or anything) to impress someone else. Or buying anything material will make you happy. Totally true.

I don't think he had a good way of writing it though and he def sounds a bit douchy. Pick up artist? lol

Typically millennial thinking. "Millenials care more about experiences than luxury products. Well I'm a millennial who cares about BOTH. I love traveling as much as I enjoy luxury goods and I don't buy Rolex because I care about what others think.

I love Swiss watches because I've always liked watches since I was a kid. Ever since I held my father's solid gold Breguet in my hands I fell in love.

The bigger picture with this thread is the bad rap that Rolex's get. "OOooo a Rolex, Mr Rich guy..." That's truly the attitude of a lot of people that don't get watches. They assume you are just blinging and showing off.

Why Rolex? I guess it's the marketing... the mystique... the price, for sure. But nobody even thinks twice of doing that to the mom that buys a 50K mini van...

Rappers are partly responsible here. They have been flossing about their Rollies for well over 2 decades. Now they're doing the same with Patek. They also got a bad rap as the watch of choice for drug lords.

Personally I don't care about any of this.

When I pull up in a brand new Rolls Royce Cullinan wearing a Richard Mille, I can guarantee it will make an impression and even if I don’t want to make any, it’ll still happen.

People is obsessed with wealth and therefore they will try to talk to the “rich-looking” guy.

Depending where you live I would say a Rolex is not impressive anymore.

Anyway, I don’t let any material object define me but I understand the rules of the game we play in this society and I will always use material stuff to benefit me as much as I can.

Crap article. Working hard and having the ability to purchase your first or next Rolex that you genuinely enjoy everytime you look at your wrist says otherwise. To some its a status symbol, to some its a business write-off. To others, its a reflection of hard work and a feeling of accomplishment, because since they were kids, they wanted a good job and to own a beautiful timepiece (me).

I know not everyone loves the article, that’s the point.

A different view on something that some of us consider a hobby.

I agree that nobody cares if you have a Rolex, but there are other things in the article that I don’t agree with.

You guys should see his other article when he mentions a Rolex Datejust is an investment which yields about 5% a year or something like that.

The writer does make some good points, but his essay comes off as a hastily, written freshman composition assignment.
