Submariner 5513 with "Foggy" Acrylic Lens

I am now having the case tube replaced on my old 1980's 5513 submariner. My acrylic crystal appears foggy , especially when the sunlight hits it at an angle. I asked the service repair tech if he could clean the fog off the inside of the lens/crystal but he said it was part of the design.

Can someone explain this me ?

Pictures of the fog would help. I've never had a foggy acrylic crystal. I've had scratched and nicked. I've also had cracked and crazed. Foggy, not so much.

That is a classic symptom of micro-crazed acrylic.

It can happen as UV light degrades the acrylic - the effects predominantly result in a change of the material’s surface layer becoming more brittle. Over time, pressure changes or other factors create micro-cracks that aren’t readily apparent but they diffuse light when viewed at an angle.

My thought is you ought to source a NOS crystal in the near future.

Or maybe a TrueDome D19, since NOS crystals are a bit hard to find, and sometimes also fragile.

I got a new acrylic service crystal fitted on my 1989 5513 at the RSC a few years ago. Looks pretty similar to the later ones from that era, I think.

I also had this issue with my 1968 meters first. Very foggy. Ended up buying from True Dome and it has been great!

Similar, but not the same, original T19 (or its replica D19 from TrueDome) produce a lens effect close to the perimeter. And looks to be overall taller, but his I did not measure, so can't be 100% sure.

the true dome are very transparent, but these are no exception to what the OP mentioned.
Although the D19 is also my favorite, all acrylic dome i have been trying had this foggy looking style when exposed to certain sunlight angle...
