It is still at my watchmaker. He called me with some disturbing news:
-The rotor axle has been replaced not too long ago, but with an aftermarket axle; -The balance axle has not been oiled correctly and is completely worn; -The balance spring is not mounted correctly and actually TOUCHES the darn balance wheel when the watch is faced up; -The mechnism has been oiled at places that should not have oil (seconds axle); -The housing of the main spring is worn; -Gaskets in the crown are dried out and have not been replaced. On the bright side: apart from these idiot errors, the movement looks as if it's brand new. Fortunately he is an expert and does not work to earn lots of money.. He's going to clean and oil the watch, replace the balance axis with an original one, replace a part of the housing of the main spring, add new gaskets, replace the chrystal and rebalance the balance spring. I am still to decide whether he'll replace the replacement rotor axle.. Total cost will be about 550 EUR, which is a lot but not as much as Rolex would have requested :-) To wrap things up: for a total of 2100-2200 (watch + service) EUR I have a serviced and fully functional 1601 which is acceptable. I just hate idiots who buy a Rolex to show off and then let their local inexperienced watchmaker service it with aftermarket parts. What are your thoughts on the rotor axle? Replace the current replacement? My watchmaker says that he recommends to leave it like this, for the investment of another 150-200 EUR does not pay off in the coming 15-20 years. |

I agree with your watch doctor, but getting second opinions is always a wise thing to do!

Must say that I am on the one hand relieved that everything will be fine when it is back on my wrist, but on the other annoyed that the previous owner took such bad care of it.
