Icon9 First landing!

Hi,

It seems like a no mans land here!

One stupid but interesting question:
Does anyone (has to be expert) knows actually how much does it cost Rolex to make a Sub Date or Sea Dweller? We all know what its price to pay. I wonder how much Rolex make for each of them?

From what they did (superbly), the case, bracelet, etc.. it doesn't seem a very high cost production, since it is so massive produced. Of course, no doubt it uses very hgih quality materials. But economic viewpoint, it must be very cost effective for such a mass quantity product?!?!?

Hope to break the ice for 1st landing...

I don't know either, but I'm sure their cost doesn't increase as frequently as their prices

My guess is less than $50 of material, even factoring in R&D (predicated on the volume of watches they sell over the years). And that $50 is a generous guesstimate.

Considering Rolex is privately owned, their manufacturing costs, I would assume, would be a very strongly guarded secret. Even within Rolex, I would think very few people would know.

As it is said in a Monty Python sketch:

"There's a dead bishop on the landing!"

(Text to sketch).

Well, to be serious now.

Have a look at this overview over MSRP and whole sale prices

Admittedly, the prices are as old as this thread and not sure if all amounts are reliable, you still get an idea of how much Rolex earns on Rolex watches, though.

Welcome to TRF SD4000.

I honestly do not think anyone will know the truth cost per Rolex, other than Rolex itself.

I think most of us understand that steel, gold, platinum and other jewels used cannot be justified for the asking price, but we also know that the premium paid mostly goes to the branding, sponsorship and advertising cost Rolex invested.

Hence, it is a very difficult question to answer for your maiden thread.

So difficult it's been almost 10 years since the OP asked it!

Not to sound crass, but who gives a damn what it cost Rolex to make a watch. You either buy one, or you don't. You either love them, or you don't. Trying to figure out how much they cost Rolex is pointless unless you're doing some sort of study.

OMG... this is such an old thread.

Has to be the oldest thread bump ever.

The OP was member 3.
The next poster was member 4.
The next poster was member 9.
The next poster was member 14 (banned).

4 years later it got a bump by the kid (member 7797).
Another 5 years, and Sam bumps it (member 106114).

Wow... That fact sheet alone was worth the thread bump.

His post was so idiotic that the mods had no choice but to ban him. That has to be worthy of some kind of prize.

And my reaction to his fatal post:
