Would you do this trade? BLNR <> Patek 5110
Hey all,
Looking for diverse opinions to aide my decision-making. I worked out a deal with an e-commerce jewelry store, my 2015 BLNR with some desk diving swirls on the clasp + $11k cash for a mint Patek 5110J on new Patek strap with Patek deployant and papers (no wood box) + 15 months warranty. The BLNR has been a trusted companion on many international trips and I wore it at my wedding. It's also appreciated in value (bought it for 8k, now the new ones sell for as high as 12k with used ones going for as much as 10k). I do love this watch, no doubt. For the last 12 months I've been in love with the YG Patek 5110. Never had the opportunity to try on the 37mm model but I did try on its bigger brother, the 5130 recently and loved the finish and feel, even though it was white gold. I'm aware of its shortcomings (doesn't account for DST). My main reservations are lack of sweeping seconds (could it get too boring to look at?) and if it's capable of being an almost daily driver. Yet, I feel like the Rolex has become a little too commonplace. Despite it being so scarce, I usually see 2 or 3 at Hodinkee meetups. I'm stoked about the possibility of acquiring my first Patek from the upper echelon of haute horlogerie. I can't justify owning both at this moment in time and it would definitely be an impulsive splurchase so cooler heads like yours need to chime in and either enable me or talk me out of it. |

I'd save for the Patek but would keep the BLNR based on sentiment alone. It's your wedding watch and I'm sure you can link it to other signifiant times in your life. I'm also biased towards Rolex FYI

If you’re tired of the blnr, then why not right? Value wise, it seems like a decent deal, but I’d make sure I love it first as you mentioned you never tried on the 37mm. Good luck

Yes. The 5110 is the best looking non-limited World Timer. I think the deal is pretty good (getting the Patek for about 19-20k). The 37mm wears fine since the lugs are slightly long. I briefly had the 5110p and really liked it but the hands are a little too short (not a deal breaker for me, though).

Paul Pluta (aka Archieluxury) has one, which is enough for me to avoid like the plague.

I wouldn't. A neat watch, but too busy for my tastes. But you should wear the watch you love.

I would not do the trade. And definitely not with a BLNR. Also being a Wedding watch, that makes it extra special.

I'd keep the BLNR because of the sentimental value it holds.

Two very different watches! A sports watch that is relatively common vs. a dress watch that has been discontinued over 10 years and one you will rarely ever see, even at a watch event. Pure personal preference and I would get the one that you will enjoy wearing on the wrist more. In an ideal world, you would own both for different purposes.

If you are NOT ready for it, maybe you shouldn’t do it. Also, you have so much memories with the BLNR, why sell it??
I sold my daily Omega Seamaster and I am regretting it until now. Not so much of the watch worth but the memories it share on my wrist. Now that I have 3-4 watches in the rotation, none share the same sentiments the Omega had. Keep the memories and pass it on to your children. My daughter already claim my very first Rolex Daytona 116520. |

I wouldn't, but I just don't care for worldtimer dials. If you had some kind of deal worked out for an Aquanaut I'd go the other way

For an Aquanaut 5167 yes, but no way for a 37mm world timer.

Per the OP, I wouldn't do the trade, but then I'm not a Patek fan. And if I were to get a Patek, it wouldn't be the World Time. Not to mention, you have a particular history with your BLNR that elevates it above the sum of its parts. |

I know you lusted for a Patek and the world timer is one of their signature styles but I think you will get tired of the 37mm soon after and find it dated...there is a reason why Patek discontinued it
And also it will be hard to unload the 37mm as additional time passes... I would pass on the deal...and save a bit more for the larger world timer And really having been there and done all that...I came back to rolex as they are actually good travel watches that is all purpose... Good luck in your decision
