TRF Search Feature

For quite some time now, I have had difficulty with the search function on this site. When I put in a reference number or model type in the for sale or general discussion sections, it brings up post from ten years ago. Has anyone else had this issue and, if so, what is the solution?

Usually if you google a question about rolex the right answer comes up on the Rolex forums page anyway.

Absolutely not true the search function works very very well, when you put the correct information to start the search. And to the original poster this thread should be in the Announcements/feedback & support forum.

It's awful. The best luck I've had with it is an "advanced search" and only searching in the title. But even that missing lots. If you search entire posts you get really old results.

Respectfully disagree with Padi here, I have had all kinds of problems with the search feature.

As a normal user, I have to respectfully disagree, as well. I am on a lot of other forums and their search tools are far superior for returning relevant results. I get far better results for TRF by actually leaving the forum, doing a search through Google directly, and then clicking on the TRF links that appear and re-entering TRF through those links. I cannot get the same results by searching within TRF using the search tool.

My best results finding something is using Advanced Search function and using the tools there. Also, I try to bracket my search terms in different attempts to gather posts that are even tangential to my targeted quest.

As for those who struggle with PHP skills, the Google suggestion is a good one. It’s easy to do by pointing their interface at TRF website url followed by search term(s). For me, it’s the easiest way to find your BS meter when I need it

PS: the meter isn’t for you - it’s for the claim that the search function doesn’t work

My experience is similar to yours. One word or 4 digit (minimum) searches in the “advanced search”, searching in title only work well. I have had a hard time getting results when I string a few words together.

For example…… my search for “black bay 36” yielded results that did not contain “black bay 36”

Padi, I posted this here due to overall relevance and not to be disrespectful. The search function is really not good imho. Maybe do a search for a Milgauss z blue for sale and let me know your results.

I'm going to disagree with PADI on this one as well. In recent threads of the same topic, other moderators recognized the issue and said it was being worked on.

The search function used to work much better. I'd say there have been at least three different threads on this exact topic over the last couple months..... But you'd have to search for them, lol. In its current state, you can still search effectively, it just takes a couple more steps than the once efficient quick search. Just go to advanced and choose a time period to search and it works like a charm.

I searched "black bay 36' and this was my result.

A snip of part of the first page.

Is it the same as your result?

Advanced search - black bay 36 - titles only - rolex watches for sale (only).

Your results look similar to mine
My search was a little broader and covered the entire Rolex Watch Forum

Looks like the "move" function is functioning to spec.

Checking "lock" next.

Interesting response! Did you help develop the algorithm for the search or something?

Maybe you can share your methodology since you are absolute in your opinion on it working "very very well" as you might be the only one with a positive response to the OP.

Are there any Admins that look at this forum? Search is a huge problem and I believe it started after the “upgrade” that happened a few months ago. It’s as if the indexes were all corrupted and you rarely if ever get any recent results. Searching often turns up results from years (decades) ago.

Is anything being done about this?

Yes, the search function is borderline garbage. It does search, but for exactly what I have no idea. The best way is what someone else said…use your favorite search engine like google and tack on rolexforums to the topic you’re looking for.

This^!

It's the simple way to get what you're after...

Personally, I rarely use the search feature on the forum, as I have a pretty good idea where to look for most things. But when I do a simple model search, or a key phrase, I usually have no issues with returned results. All being current and up to date.

All the time.
If you read back down this forums sub-section, you'll find this very topic has been mentioned, and answered multiple times..

The code for the search feature is a generic one, used by the forums base v-bulliton layout. Whether it can be enhanced is above my pay grade, but I will inquire for you!

Has full search function simply been disabled for "non-pledge" members? I seem to recall it working fine for many years. Now the last couple of times it gave me only 6-8 year old threads.

Search is working fine.
Log out and log back in.
Clear cache.
Search threads and select sub-forum.
Use more precise keywords.
