Take a 5990 or wait for 5726?

Got a surprise call from my AD that they have a 5990/1A delivered and ready for me if I want it. It was previously on the top of my wishlist but I have cooled a little on it a little since they told me last year that it would be tough to get. They also said that I’d have a better chance of getting a 5726/1A which has successively grown on me. So this came a little out of the left field and I think they’re honest when they say that they really don’t know when they will get a 5726/1A next time. I don’t think my store cred is good enough for 2 Nautilii, so it’s either this or wait. I would say that I have a veeeery small preference in favor of 5726 over 5990. Should I buy the latter due to fleeting chance or is it stupid FOMO think? Not looking to flip it so value vs price is not a factor.

Anyone who owns both that can advise as to which of 5990/1A and 5726/1A is the winner in the long term?

5990 is a great watch but pretty chunky, it’s not easy to wear with a shirt or a suit if that’s a consideration. My personal preference would be the 5726 as it’s a little bigger than the 5711 but still very wearable.

I don’t think you would be unhappy with either

personally the 5990 is one of my favorites (if not the favorite) nautilus. so i wouldn’t even need to think about it, especially compared to the 5726. i say go for it, but in the end it’s really just up to you, do you want to take this one you’ve been guaranteed to get if you want, or do you wanna risk it and maybe get a different model at some point in the future?

5990 is a great watch, and I'm sure you can reverse your preference again once it's on your wrist!

Haven't owned either but looks like the 5990 is only 1mm thicker? I appreciate that can make a difference to feel though.

Can you go and try it in person? You will know then if you want it or not.

Always get the piece you want so in this case wait.

Thanks for the insights. Unfortunately they won’t break the seal on the 5990 until I’ve sealed the deal and I’ve never seen a 5726 in the metal, so I’d be going in more of less blind into any of these deals. I’m leaning towards buying it and putting in a new for a 5726 down the line.

I have the 5990 and love it, so it’s a no-brainer for me. But, you get one shot at this so get the one you like the most, and if that means a wait, then so be it.

Take the 5990 as you would have already made this purchase if the watch was available. To sit and wait for a watch that may not be delivered to you puts you back on the wheel of then not wanting it. The, buy the watch you want, advice is solid but the watch you want is here in the 5990. You would have a great piece and could start the ownership experience. This is not brain surgery and if for some reason it does not work out then move on to your next purchase. Over thinking it and self doubt are crippling in the watch hobby. Don't fall into it, just get your watch and enjoy.

5726 is really hard to get as a lot of VIPs still havent got it, I was told by the dealers. If i were you I would take 5990. Sadly no AD has offered me any of Natuilus, so just keep waiting, congrats.

So true, I was told by the AD I would be the next back in 2017. Then the hype and so many VIPs and big spenders jump into the queue and now I am nowhere near it. Haha

If you like both, get the 5990 now. You may not get another chance for a Nautilus.

i got offered the 5726/1A on strap last summer and refused it by my friendly AD . he's an old friend and i explained i seldom wear watches on straps , he agreed and when we have lunch every other month for the last 10 + yrs,
he has barely seen me wear a strap watch , even my 5270 has been languishing in the bank for a good 9 yrs. i wanted the blue dial on 5726 on bracelet but that was gonna be another 12 to 15 months wait.

low and behold sept last yr a 5990 came along and he offered me that instead. For me the 5990 is the daddy of them all its the complete patek sports watch ,its a gmt and a chrono all built into one,
its been my daily wearer for the last 9 months. even me sports rolex aint had a look in.

A good friend on here got a 5990/1a too last yr and his 5164a has been languishing in the drawer ever since .

its no thicker than a subdate or a rolex gmt. wears super comfy and goes pretty under the radar and i haven't had anyone notice it. i couldn't comment how it wears with a shirt as i seldom wear a shirt bar family functions to which ive been to none in the last 15 months.

fortunately got a 5712 blue too last month and the 5990 has and will be worn more than that . All depends what you want out of the nautilus a dressier sleeker watch or a perfect all rounder which the 5990 is.

Seems like the opinion is in favor of ”a bird in the hand” 5990. I’m leaning towards that choice as well. Anyone found the 120m WR and four pushers on the 5990 not feeling like a good match? Would like to use it for my frequent lake swims.

Got a little teaser, I think I’ve made up my mind to buy it. Just gotta prep the credit cards for the hurt first, heh.

Depend on your lifestyle.....

The 5990 is more sportier...

and

The 5726 is more dresser...

I tried on the 5990R and I would suggest buying the 5990/1A and buy the 5726 as well when it’s available :)
