what's eating people?

no smiles and laughter where i am, people laughed a lot more when i was a kid, its all so intense and serious now, young people barely acknowledge each other, its worrying, i always make a point of engaging in even the smallest way,

We were brought up to be civil, is this where the problem lies, if there is a problem, its not just the young though

A smiley jovial person seems a rare thing nowadays, maybe its the uk.

Perhaps it’s just where you live!? It’s not something I’ve really noticed... people around me seem as cheerful as ever ...

People spend too much time with their head in the phones or earphones in which shouts ‘don’t speak to me’!

Agree 100% - walking around like zombies. In my area people mostly have their heads up their own behind and think they are the center of the world. Sad to experience that development in the human race. (Not saying that this is happening everywhere).

People are certainly much less willing to make eye-contact or engage with others.
Mob phones are clearly to blame as everywhere you go people are obsessed with their phones. Only older folks will smile and have a casual conversation with you because many are not stricken with the phone-addiction.
I find friendly people everywhere I go because I smile and say something pleasant to anyone who doesn't have a phone stuck in their face.

Blame it Rolex.
No Stainless Steel, no incoming, as as result they're all grumpier than their mothers-in-laws hemmorhoids

I tend to agree.

People nowadays just seem less interested in real face to face conversation and more interested in texting and social media ... as I type this

There would be food shortages though.

And no more Oreos.

I don't know about that. Just last night, when I hinted at a little romantic intimacy with my sweetheart, she just laughed and laughed.

Everyone is looking down.... at their phones. Ever go to a coffee shop now, everyone waiting for their coffee looking down. If it’s not a screen, many don’t know how to engage socially with small talk.

I live in a city, I see lots of people everyday. I can tell you from my encounters that there is a certain generation that lacks fundamental people skills and emotion. They are super absorbed in a virtual world that is not real and creates a false sense of values. Things they feel are important really aren't. Eye contact is very uncomfortable for many people today. I do however think that if you smile first, you might be surprised how many people react positively.

It's not the UK, it's everywhere there is tech, period. Also, I personally don't think it's intense, just unemotional and rudderless. Kind of like a compass without the magnet.

Keep smiling!

Fear.

It started with mass media in the 1980s when everyone was a threat, and we created helicopter parents who told their children to be afraid of everyone because somewhere something bad had happened. The constant barrage by the news media scary news made everyone lock their doors and button up. Good for ratings. That younger generation were trained to stay away from strangers.

Then the child abduction thing started with the milk carton pictures. The only problem was almost all abductions were by disputing parents on child custody cases.

Then in the cities if you made eye contact, strangers would approach and ask for money so you never looked at anyone. Once earbuds happened you could walk along and pretend to be listening to music.

THEN, the iPhone.

That's my theory.

Totally agree. People are less tolerant, less patient, and more irritable nowadays. And I doubt things are going to change for the better.

Guessing it’s a product of our current societal constructs. Suppose that many a persons are afraid to even fart as they will be called racist, bigots, left or right wing, feminist, homophobe, intolerant, having the wrong opinion, judged, hateful...etc.

Kind of see logic in this, the boundaries of social interaction have moved so much. So easy to offend people or be seen as a danger/inappropriate etc

Example, bloke on his own smiles at a child, seen as very dodgy, smiles at woman a perv etc
