I pulled off my party piece of farting in time to La Bamba at a work do the other day.

I was labelled a disgusting degenerate with not even una poca de gracia.

It’s political correctness gone mad I tell thee.

i will put it in a succinct way, as i see it,

people look like they have the entire world on their shoulders, they dont do irreverance anymore.

its all way too uptight and serious.

Yes and no.

I also has to do with who is the butt of the jokes.

When the majority class thought that everyone was just like them, the so called jokes could easily be about a certain race, a certain sexual orientation and a certain gender. It was all good clean fun. Except was it?

I'm glad those days are gone and people got called out on it.

I'm as self deprecating as any good Canadian, but humor is great as long as there isn't a constant victim.

I think we can do a lot better and still have fun.

Personally, I don’t see all this negativity, but maybe I live in a different world.

Rather reminds me of the quote from Socrates :

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”

i think class might play a part, its big in the uk, its not as obvious as in the past, but its still there, many working class people play the middle class game, except they dont earn enough, they cant be around true middle class, and they dont want to be around the working class, stuck in a strange snobby limbo, where they feel uptight and cant laugh.

I am usually the first to greet people with a pleasant comment and a smile and almost always get the same in return. Maybe its the egg not the chicken?

I can say this...I am so sick of watching any news at all. That eats me. It’s everywhere from all parties. Each source of news is biased one way or another. You cant escape it. This never happens in the private sector. It’s beyond childish and unprofessional to say the least.

Funny video Dave. I'm in California so nobody talks to one another here. Unless they are trying to sell you something.

If you had performed it at a 10 year olds birthday party you'd have been legendary.

Are you talking about the people in their 20's now?

For some reason, the "younger" people that our company hires doesn't look up when they walk, they don't say "hi", they won't make eye contact, they all seems to have "blank stares" ...

I don't know, but young people are just weird ..

THEN, the iPhone.

That’s pretty accurate...

I think people are maybe overestimating their value, assuming everyone else isn't worth talking to. Or they'd rather use their phone because it feels safer than real-life interactions

This discussion reminds me of this video, which might actually hold some clues to the social condition some describe.

Not the case here. People are always smiling and engaging in small talk. Yes, there are d!cks everywhere and Hawaii is no exception but for the most part most people acknowledge each other here with a smile.

I can't really speak for people as a whole, but I can be fairly introverted. I wouldn't say I'm asocial (different than antisocial), though. I have a tiny (less than 10) group of people that I talk to on a regular basis. Once I'm comfortable with people, I'm friendly, but I can be very standoffish. I'm very distrusting of the general public, too. IDK, "people" eat me, I guess.

Visit Florida or somewhere where there's really good weather. You might find you see a lot more smiles. So what's wrong with the UK anyway? Is it the high inflation? Is it the high taxes? Is it the high theft rate? Is it the weird politicians self serving? And maybe there's something else,

I don't know.

Perhaps it's time for you to move :)

I'm visiting Alaska right now and there are many happy people :)

Being gregarious, my natural inclination is to engage people (yes, strangers) in conversation. I imagine most give me a quick 'once-over' and decide that I look civilised and unlikely to bite them for a buck, and therefore harmless. The trick is to not hold them up if they look like they want to be somewhere else, or are looking uncomfortable.
Most old folk 'get it' and are happy to chat. Some young folk are terrific and seem to enjoy talking to someone much older. Others look at me like they don't know what to do because I'm not on their 'phone. I smile and leave them alone.
