New Guy Here - Old Rolex Agency Owner

Hi Friends,

I started a jewelry and watch shop, Timm's Jewelers, in Milwaukie, Oregon in 1966 and, as luck would have it I was offered a Rolex Agency in the late 1960s. The agency put me deeply in debt for a while, but by employing conservative business practices, I was able to pull it off.

I'll never forget our Rolex Rep coming in the store one day announcing the new Rolex 18K Presidential ... at a retail of $1,000. Holy Crap, who ever thought of such a thing??? But, I bought one and it sold about a week later

The President of Rolex International, Rene Denton, visited us every other year and he was a true gentleman. He became a friend.

My wife, Karen, and I worked side-by-side, and eventually we retired from our very successful store in 1992, at the age of 48 (her) and 49 (me). I knew we'd probably have ten good years and we've never regretted the decision to retire one little bit.

Now, twenty-five years later, we're 73 and 74 years of age and showing our age ... but our lives are still full of fun and love.

Story of a watch: About a year before we retired, I bought a Rolex 1601 and put a Submariner dial on it. I was deeply into international hunting at the time and the watch looked just right. And, of course, it went on trips to Zimbabwe, South Africa and the Yukon Territory with me.

After wearing the Rolex for about seven years, it stopped and I put it away in the safe.

About a month ago, I discovered my old Rolex in the safe. It was cool looking back on my relative youth and a cool watch.

In truth, I'm kinda back into the Rolex mode now, so I'll probably just buy a new steel and gold from DavidSW or one of the other fine dealers here and put my old watch back in the safe. Anyway, that's kinda the plan for now.

Below is a photo of my Rolex ... Enjoy!

All the best,

Steve Timm

Welcome and I'm sure whatever you choose will work fine as long as you like it. And of course you can always flip it if you don't.

The mod on your old 1601 had me wondering how you got a 40mm dial into a 36mm case? Any hints would be great to hear.

Papers and serial are suggesting a 16200. Still 36mm though, you'e right, Sub dial shouldn't fit.

Yep, lost me.

Guess I did things in my life that my father and ALL of our progenitors did and is no longer politically or socially acceptable. Even to hint about it is verboten.

Friends, I've published over one-million words in (I cannot say what kind of)-magazines and never had a single rejection. And I donated all of those monies, 24-years worth of writing, to our Catholic grade school children's education.

Anyway, my sixth post here was totally unacceptable to the powers that be (and you will never read this).

Some here would have appreciated what I had to give, but with great sadness, I must now leave.

God Bless All of You,

Steve Timm

Really? Hang around, this is a great Forum. Play by the rules and no issues. By the way, you do not make the rules. My experience is that the Moderators here are the best. No issues.

So confused... was excited to ask about experiences selling Daytonas back in the 70s and 80s but seems like something has gone wrong here...
