Indeed so, but the OP is asking about 5500 Explorers, a smaller and in most instances less desirable model, with additional complications when buying because the reference was also used for basic Air-Kings.

etc...
Something is wrong with the colour of the hands, but the dial looks good.

I stand corrected as Milton is better the expert. However I did own a lovely gilt 5500 Explorer with a 1530 movement. Regretfully sold.

I'm in tepid pursuit of a 1016 and feel your energy, honestly. But it only took about 10 hours of research for me to uncover a couple frankenwatches - wrong movement for the serial number, dials that look too good for the year and price, etc.

Take a deep breath, do a ton of research, then go to a reputable dealer from TRF - at least that's my approach. Good luck!

So any recommendations for a reputable dealer ?

Here is my 5500.
I purchased it at a provincial auction 4 years ago, and it was described as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Precision with no mention of Explorer.
It has a serial number of 1738*** and a gilt dial with the correct 1520 movement.
The bracelet is a JB USA with a figure 6 under the crown on the inside clasp.
The colour of the markers and hands are matching. and the acrylic crystal is in good condition.
I have inner and outer boxes, but am unsure whether these are correct.

I am aware of 5500 Explorers being a contentious issue but would welcome any informed opinions!
