Hi. My father recently wants to buy himself a fine watch. He is looking at Patek, likes the look of the JLC master thin watches I showed him online and today I'll show him Breguet online. But looking online does not quite make a complete search if you dont know what you're looking for, so I ask you for help.

He is looking at a:
A round watch,
Bracelet or strap either is OK,
Thin, elegant watch
No complications needed, but is indifferent (either way) to date and seconds
Dial diameter small (maybe 38mm???) (but please advise larger or smaller dials also if you think they're nice), and
Precious metal (no diamonds though).

He has a hurt arm and most automatics stop on his wrist - but if he buys an auto wont he just be able to wind it everyday OR with his condition is a manual wind better?

And advice, links to watches much appreciated. I thank you all in advance.

one word of advice, get the lange with manual wind version...

they are a comparable contender to patek

Patek Calatrava. THE last word in thin, elegant watches. There is no substitute.

Perhaps not this exact model of the Calatrava (there are several), but it makes my point:

I have seen the Lange 1 many years ago - also gorgeous watches!

Tough one.. It depends on what you rank them for I'd say. My personal rank is Patek, Breguet, Vacheron/Lange, Jaeger LeCoultre.

I wouldn't worry about selecting a watch with an automatic. Nearly all automatics will have a considerable power reserve. If he were to wind an automatic with the regularity of a hand wound movement it would be similar in operation to a hand wound.

Another idea might be this one from AP. (Jules Audemars)

36mm, 7.7mm thick, a variety of metals and dials, etc... I think the date version is 39mm.

ocwatching's watch is superb - the kind of watch I know my father has in mind.

Also thank you for posting the Audemars Piguet pictures - I had forgotten they make dress watches as well. A question - so on the front of the AP it says "Audemars Piguet" and on the back (if marked) it reads "Jules Audemars"? Am off to the AP website now ... :-)
