Patina? Damage?

Hi everyone,

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong thread, I'm new to this.

I'm considering buying this DD 36 solid gold from 1986 - it is in great condition but there is a brownish discoloration around the markers on the dial.

The seller says this is patina. What is it? How did it happen? Could it be an indication of water damage and should I be careful? Can it be removed?

Thanks!

Common oxidation / interaction of the pip and dial over a long period of time. Is the condition uniform on entire dial? Actually looks interesting to me. If you don’t like the aesthetic take a pass.

^^^^

Just check out what radium used to do to dials. Watches that sat for long periods of time without the hands changing position would have the outline of the hands burned into the dial. Tritium is far less radioactive, but it still can cause discoloration on the dial.
