Opened one of these tonight with some prime filets -- such a phenomenal wine -- that never disappoints -- drinks just as well young or aged 10 years.

Cheers all!!

What would you like to know? By the way. Darn autocorrect, it's the Limousin region

I'm about 5 hours from Napa. Im a home winemaker. Fortunately for me, my father has taught me well. He is an award winning wine maker. It does also help to have a complete wine making facility at my disposal. We own a vineyard and sell fruit to quite a few wineries on the Central Coast. After harvest I go out into the vineyard and pick the bunches that were missed and left behind. I use this fruit to make my wine. Its a hobby only really.

Here are just a few of my fathers awards. The awards cover all 4 walls in the lab:

Walking down a row of our family vineyard:

Took the family out to a local steakhouse tonight. Wife and I both enjoyed this, though it's still a few years away from hitting its prime drinking window IMO.........

Matt..
That region is close to the Cognac region is it the same wood they use ?
What's the alcohol content ?
I didn't see a year so I'm guessing 2013/14 so 36 months all together ? It still has inky black after 36 or did I miss read it and should be 18 months. You had the wood ship in since your near Napa ??

Have any extra

It was quite good my friend.

Such a seamless wine, very well balanced across the board - would pair well with just about anything!

I must have gotten excited and written 18 months twice. It was only in barrel for 18 months. The fruit was picked in September of 2014. 13.9% alcohol.

The wood for the barrels come from particular forests in France. ie, Argonne, Vosges, Nevers, Tronçais, Allier, etc. The wood used in my barrel came from the Limousin forest. It was fired to a medium toast and is Known for less tannic woods, almost neutral in oak flavors. I didnt want to over oak the fruitiness of the Merlot but still soften the tannins of the Tannat varietal.

You asked about the color. The 4 varietals I used in this blend are very dark to begin with. Not much color is lost until polish filtering just before bottling and even then very little color is lost. Here is a barrel sample taken just before its final racking.

Cognac barrels use different woods too depending on the desired flavors as well.

It was pretty dang good. Wished I'd had the time to double decant beforehand to give it more air time. Won't touch any more of my '08s for another 5 years.

I just watched an hour and a half long documentary on Netflix last week about one of the greatest wine swindles of all time. Here's a recent article about it from the Guardian. If you have Netflix, open a bottle, and you'll be riveted to the show. Amazing stuff.......

https://www.theguardian.com/global/2...intage-swindle

I'm a merlot fan myself........

Andy Erickson's new venture, I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is THE best young syrah that has ever crossed my lips, and that was BEFORE I knew who the winemaker was...

High praise! I've had the La Magdelena cab on a number of occasions, but never the Syrah.

Have you had Andremily? That's my yardstick currently to compare Cali Syrahs against.

Bruh, wasn't trying to rain on your parade.

Was just curious if you'd had the Andremily, and if you considered the Favia better. I would've had to hunt some down. Guess I don't have to. But I'll certainly keep my eyes open for it.

Pulled a couple of gems for dinner with friends this evening ---

Going to start with the Montrachet -- this wine has a great nose with quite a bit of fruit with a great mid- palate. And a slightly dry finish. A very well balanced wine. Although...I honestly have yet to be disappointed by any Chassagne-Montrachet!!

The 12 Spottswoode cab is a gem - in and of itself. Parker rated it 99 points for a reason. If a California cab would exhibit Bordeaux-esq characteristics -- this one is a fine example. It has a Pauillac style notes on the nose and some subtle oak. Very rich and full bodied with good acidity. Definitely could be cellared for 20 years -- but will be interesting to see how it's coming along.

Cheers all!!!

Whilst all those lucky devils are living it up in Vegas, I got to enjoy the most magical day with my little boy yesterday meeting Thomas the tank.

Opened a bottle of Penfolds as a perfect end to a perfect day!

Didn't manage to finish it last night so I'm having the last few glasses today whilst watching the FA cup semi final.
