Tell me the world isn’t ending

Weird weather! Living in SOCAL all my life, which is 35 years…. OK OK! So it’s a little more… 40… … MOVING ON

For the third time in my life I saw snow this past winter. Now, we are actually getting hit with a hurricane.

WTH is going on?

Somehow, this is either Jock or Chewbacca’s fault

It's going to weaken pretty substantially by the time it hits the San Diego area. CA has much colder water than what we have in FL. Plus, all those mountains in southern CA can't possibly be conducive to a hurricane. FL is totally flat by comparison.

With that said, it's likely going to be a HUGE rain event for the folks in southern CA. In FL, we would consider that a HUGE win for us, but I'd imagine that could still create a lot of problems for everyone in CA. So be careful and stay safe.

Everybody wants to find and announce a "First" something.

This is the typical monsoon season on the west coast, so weather flow is pretty typical. You know, when all the coastal homes slide onto the beach, and everybody acts like it's never happened before.

Hurricane Hilary isn't the first, but the last hurricane coming up this way was in '78, so it will be your "first" too. (wink, wink)

Hang onto your hat and enjoy the dry aquifers getting a much-needed drink. I'm turning off the sprinklers this weekend.

A week ago almost to the hour, my part of Minneapolis got the worst hail storm we have seen in 20+ years. I have been cleaning up the yard of leaves and branches all week, 3 inch hail or more in some places.

About to see if State Farm is really a "good neighbor", as my roof and skylights are toast. Lot a people without windshields and back car windows--at least we avoided that.

Point is, the anomalies have certainly increased. For example, last year we set a record for snowfall, which is saying something here in MN. Gotta run--left a window open that needs to be closed as we are now under a red alert for air quality due to Canadian wildfire smoke blowing in. (Seriously).

Too bad that one guy is no longer with us. He’d love this one. Oh well. All the rain should help with the drought though!

+1. I absolutely despise the media and this is the type of scare they love to put into the general public. If anyone has been in Phoenix anytime in August, you will know about Monsoon weather. Phoenix is flat, just like Florida, the streets become rivers sometimes and it's all part of the every year weather cycle.

This time it's a little more to the west, but once it makes landfall in Baja, it will dissipate considerably. Socal should be happy they're getting some rain which will put off any possible wildfires, which, BTW, knock on wood, has been extremely quiet so far this year.

It's just the news being the news.

It's going to end up with a little rain (if that) and a nice breeze.

The media these days:

Normal weather = weather
Abnormal weather = full blown pockylips

It’s getting tiresome. Outliers happen.

The uk and particularly the South had a hot June. For weeks the headlines screamed ‘heatwave’ & ‘when will it hit 40’. It didn’t. It rained continuously like most Summers!

The part that seldom “weakens” is the rain load - hope the winds abate for all concerned. It’s the flooding that categorization fails to communicate.

It’s the flooding that can kill more than the winds - water running down mountain slopes, flooding waterways and streets and communities.

Flooding kills the most during hurricanes - because Hilary is very large, rain will begin long before making landfall especially Eastward of the eye.

I used to live in Texas and survived hurricane Harvey. So I got some Pro tips:

1 - get some bottled water and beef jerky in case the electricity goes out
2 - store your non water resistant watches inside the dishwasher in case there is flooding
3 - flashlights
4 - if you're prepared it can be kind of neat. Nobody will expect you to come to work during a hurricane. I got three days off myself, but I guess these days there is Zoom and Teams :(.

Ideally, you want to be on the western side of the eye wall . A lot less rain. The eastern side is more fierce. More wind, rain and possible tornadoes.

In NE FL, that’s what we look at. We always want to be west of the eye wall.

If it hugs the coast, that’s not going to be good for Southern CA. Best case scenario would be for it to drift East, beyond the mountains. But that wouldn’t be a good thing for AZ and NV. Either way, someone is getting impacted by this.

Hopefully it doesn't do much to the West Coast. With any Luck we won't see the worst of it water wise. Mud slides are a biotch too. Be Safe Everyone!

Media hypes things for sure that's what gets them money. But things are worse, now. I have pics from my first days of school (late 1970's and im wearing full pants and a light jacket) in early sept in NJ. I dont need a jacket in NJ until late Nov now. I dont recall weeks on end of the sky looking like mars, and smelling like fire for weeks on end in the north east. Last year while driving the 6 miles home one day it took me 6-7 hours due to a flood and 6 people died that night. In my many years in the same area, that never happened. I dont need a weather man to tell me which way the wind blows.
