Should I break the seal on my 5070g
I don’t know if any of your were there or bidding tonight at the Phillips Auction of watches in NYC, but I was the winning buyer of the 2005 5070g full set and sealed.
I have been looking for a pristine 5070g or 5070r for a while. Since this fit everything I was looking for I bought it. However, now I am debating putting it in the safe and buying a worn 5070. I am usually not one to save things but this has me thinking.... What are your opinions on this ridiculous matter? |

I personally wouldn’t buy a watch I didn’t intend on wearing.

What would you be saving it for? If a special occasion then perhaps. If for "value retention" then in my opinion while you are considering buying another to actually wear you don't personally need to be so scared of missing out on any potential future rise in value. How much do you think it could realistically gain vs having that cash available from.not buying the second piece to invest elsewhere?

I’d wear the one you just purchased.

I wouldn't buy a watch that's sealed and pay an auction premium for it if I were just going to pop it open and wear it. Is it worth the "sealed" premium just to open it?
That said, I would wear any watch I bought. I just wouldn't pay the "you're the first one to touch it" premium. But that's me. It's a great watch, either way.

Leave it sealed. Buy a used beater 5070g.

Keep it in the safe. Go out and buy a second hand one that you can wear daily.
Finding sealed watches is a rarity and can command a high price in the future. |

I'm very much on the side of buying a watch to wear it and not stare at it, but this might be the rare case where I would keep it sealed and buy a true per owned one.
Who knows, in the future the sealed one might cover the principal and the pre owned 5070. It certainly won't fetch a lower price that what you paid for it imo. If you can swing it and have the funds get a second one. Or go for a newer 5170 (I love the rose gold with the breguet numerals) and set aside the 5070. |

If you’re going to pay a premium for a watch like that you might as well keep it sealed. Otherwise what’s the point? I totally get and respect the allure of NOS, but it’s just not for me. However many folks see the value and they are more than happy to put them in the safe. But if you’re not going to do that, why pay the premium?

As you bought it sealed, and paid a hefty premium for that plastic bag, I'd keep it sealed.
But of course it all depends on whether that premium is something you are OK with losing should you open and enjoy the watch. For me, no matter which status a watch holds in my collection I will wear it. So for pieces which I think will have a future value higher than the purchase value I will still wear them. But sealed is different, and the market tells you that, and so I wouldn't touch it. |

You got the watch because you love it, I guess it would be nice if you break the seal and start wearing it. Congrats!!!

I really see this as exactly the same as buying any watch new from an AD and being the first to wear the piece. We all know that most pieces are cheaper purchased used but we still buy new and take the hit - this is no different. Open it and wear it with pleasure.

I'd wear that, if you had a sealed or mint P I might think of tucking it away.

Hence, my stupid post. Don’t know what that’s like. Yeah, the whole reason I paid the premium. Wanted a pristine piece. |

Are you a collector for profit or desire 'protecting the value' of investment (leave sealed)... or do you wear your timepieces? Personally, would keep it sealed as tend to wear my mechanical timepieces so need something truly durable for my active lifestyle. If you break the seal, then comes eventual service costs and wait times before maximizing resale value, as that seems to be a factor for many Patek guys here.

[QUOTE=kauebm;9147389]Perfectly said. Besides, if you don't intend to sell the watch, this whole discussion becomes moot. I was thinking I should call you because you are so close. But it was last minute because I was in Philly, by the time my helicopter landed in city it was only 3 lots away and I already missed some other pieces I was interested in. I just stayed on board and bid. |

Congratulations !!
Years ago I bought a Tudor Monte Carlo (ref 7169/0) from the early 70-ties. The watch was brand new, never worn. At that time the price was low. I figured it would be nice to have and wear. However, once I put it on my wrist I took it off again. I m someone who wears all my watches. Just this one I couldnt. It is still in the safe and I have a look at it every now and then en try to justify to myself why I should continue to keep it if I never wear it. It tought me that I should not buy NOS watches again ! I hope you make the right decission for yourself. Either way is fine. When you do wear it, dont look back. The 5070G bezel is not the easiest to keep away from scratches. Here are a few pictures of the NOS tudor and my 5070G |

I never got the idea of paying a massive premium for NOS. The moment you cut the seal, the premium you paid evaporates. But not cutting the seal also means you aren't going to be wearing the watch, which also defeats the purpose.
As Russell said above, people pay for new at an AD all the time, with the expectation of having to take a loss after it's been worn and if it has to be sold down the line. So I guess cutting the seal is pretty much the same thing, and you know you are the first person to deflower the watch. |

I was looking for an excellent / unpolished 5070g, and a dealer I happen to frequent got in a sealed one. I don’t think I paid much of a premium for it to be honest, but broke the seal and started wearing it immediately.

Saw that lot hammer, congrats. It is really your call... I would personally wear it if I know it will stay in my collection for awhile. Why not enjoy it? If you want to maybe flip it down the road for profit then buy another one.

When you buy a sealed watch that’s new old stock you’re paying a premium, if that’s the case, for a new watch not a plastic bag. So really nothing evaporates. It’s not like having a choice between a new watch and a new watch in a plastic bag.
