This is really a beyond discussion. The watch will never fund your retirement sealed or open. Just wear it.

I never warmed to the idea of buying a watch sealed just to keep in a safe and not wear.
I do understand that some people do it for "investment" purposes, or just to say that they own that watch, but these ways of thinking are flawed for these reasons: 1) Investment: Watch investing, in the long run, is like shooting in the dark - you never know which ones will be desirable down the road. If you want a real investment, it is better to buy something that actually creates output for the economy, say buy a business at a good price, or land where you can grow food or build facilities. 2) To own just say you have it: Honestly, nobody really cares if you own that watch, more so nobody cares that it's in your safe. Those that truly matter in your life could not care less about your watch, and those who do care probably hate you a little deep inside because they are secretly jealous. Wear the watch because it is cool, because it gives you that extra sense of coolness when you're wearing it. You can't take it with you when you die, and a watch sitting in a safe/box for nobody to appreciate is just plain sad. Give it to a museum instead. |

Mission accomplished, congrats! I'd wear and enjoy this exact piece you wanted. You only go around once.

Wear it. If you aren't planning to sell it anyway, there is no point in denying yourself the pleasure of having it on your wrist.

Congrats! Unless you bought it as a pure investment (which it doesn’t seem), def open and enjoy it!

Try to find a beater first. If price almost the same or does not make sense then open the sealed one =) Give yourself say 3 months to 6 months.

For me I buy watches I love and hope to retain or earn on it as a bonus.
If you bought it to purely speculate, then of course stick it in the safe. No different than buying some gold or silver. Otherwise, open it, wear it and enjoy it. You won't lose that much by opening it. |

Overwhelming response to break out the scissors.
I agree at this point. I waited so long to find the right one it deserves a nice single malt so I can enjoy the moment. Because, shortly after I will probably start the search for my next grail.... |

Why did you buy it? To own it? To wear it?

Actually, my OCD is so bad when it comes to my cars and I buy many cars a year from all over (USA/Japan/Europe) they all get shipped directly to my detailer, then to my garage or warehouse. But, my wife drives hers off the lot because I refuse to look at hers after 1 day. Isn't that one in the same essentially? But, yes to wear it. |

No, there's quite a difference. You could be a collector who bought it to own it without having determined whether you would ever wear it. After all, buying a watch sealed is a very specific act, when you could pick one up unsealed. I know someone who bought a 1675 Blueberry with the intention of just keeping it in his safe, which I think is sad (albeit understandable). He simply wanted to own it, and is immensely proud of it. On the other hand, you could be very practical collector who insists on wearing anything you buy. I know a few collectors who only wear what they buy, and they have deep pockets. Thus, whether you wear it depends on why you bought it. Did you buy it to own it, cherish it, look at it in its packaging, with the knowledge you would never unseal it; or, did you buy it to wear it? If its the latter, as you say, then you have your answer. Its a watch. Enjoy it. Wear it. Use it for what it was designed for. |

Open it and enjoy it! I remember telling my middle son to not wear a Breitling that he had purchased except on special occasions. He chose to wear it all the time but died before his 30th birthday. I am so glad he did NOT listen to my flawed advise. I now remember seeing it on him in so many pictures!

Congrats - I bought the Christies 5070G the day after. Nicely worn in, ready to go! Perhaps overpaid a little but auction results of the 5070 this season were definitely a little stronger than I suspected. My bids on the J (Phillips) and R (Christies) were unsuccessful, so now the search starts to complete the set.

As to your original question, you have paid a sealed price premium, I would be inclined to keep it that way and find an unsealed one to wear, they are not that difficult to find.

Sounds like you value the NOS status and wearing a completely unmolested watch, which I completely understand.
I'd open it up and enjoy it. Congrats on the purchase! |

Keep it sealed if you bought it for investment purpose, in this case you don't need a beater 5070. Wear it if you love the watch and plan to keep it for a long time, the joy trumps the depreciation in the short term, long term the value will likely surpass what you paid for.
